Rangers round-up: 5 transactions that would make the Rangers contenders

Nick PerriJul 23, 2010

Glenn Sather has recently said that he is looking to make the Rangers a better team for next season. As of right now the Rangers have two proven super-stars (Gaby and “King” Henrik). The Rangers will not be able to compete for much other then 8th place, unless they find a way to acquire better players. I was thinking about way’s the Rangers can make their team better, and came up with a list of moves that would actually make sense. I understand that you, the reader, may disagree with what I say if you do leave a comment in the comment section. Here I go…

5. Waive Wade Redden- First the Rangers are going to have free up cap-space, and the easiest way to do so is by waiving Wade Redden. By waiving him to the minors, his cap hit will be deleted from the books (but not the team payroll) and the Rangers will have $6.5million back. That money could be used for something useful.

4. Trade Michael Rozsival- It may be hard to find a trade partner for Michael Rozsival, but by getting rid of him it would open up more cap-space. We don’t have to get anything big back in return, but maybe a veteran d-man (Brandon Witt?) would be a good exchange. Other possible returns could be a minor leaguer or a couple of draft picks. Anything to get him off of the Rangers roster.

3. Sign a winger to play with Marian Gaborik- if the following two steps are made to open up cap-space, the Rangers should have no problem signing a good winger for Marian Gaborik to play with. Whom do I have in mind, Alexander Frolov, Lee Stempniak, Alexei Ponikarovsky, or maybe Maxim Afinogenov? Any of them would be ideal playmates for Marian Gaborik, and the Rangers would have the cap-space to do so (if they followed the previous steps).

2. Trade for a top-line center- If the Rangers happen to sign a good winger to play with Gaborik, they could still use a top-line center. Not many good centers left in Free Agency, so they would have to acquire one through trade. Brad Richards or Marc Savard would be great playmaking centers to finish off a good first line of Gaborik and another winger (again I’m saying this as if the Rangers followed the previous steps). A trade package of Brandon Dubinsky, Matt Gilroy, and a draft pick would be a fair package to send off to Dallas or Boston in return for either center.

1. Trade Marc Staal for Johnson or Doughty- If the Rangers are unable to resign Staal, it would only be smart to trade him away. The best trade to make would be trading Staal to LA in exchange for either Jack Johnson or Drew Doughty. The Kings have the money to sign Staal, and the Rangers would be getting an outstanding young defenseman. It would be the smartest thing to do. But other possible trades they could make could be Staal for Cody Hodgson or maybe Luke Schenn.

There it is 5 steps the Rangers should take to make their team better. Again, I would understand if someone disagrees with me, and if you do leave a response below. I will be on vacation the next couple of days, so if I get a chance, I will get back to you. Thanks for the read, hope you enjoyed.
