Yankees Notes: Hughes, Albaladejo, Jeter, Piniella, Trade Market

Bronx Baseball DailyJul 21, 2010

Phil Hughes got rocked, Jonathan Albaladejo got called up and gave up an earned run, and the Yankees lost 10-2 in the first game of a two game series against the Angels last night.

Here are some notes:

Hughes has now allowed at least five ER in three of his last four starts. Every home run he’s allowed this year has been at Yankee Stadium.

RHP Jonathan Albaladejo was called up before tonight’s game to take the place of Andy Pettitte who went on the DL.

Speaking of Pettitte, the Yankees will not relax Hughes’ restrictions because of Pettitte landing on the DL.

Derek Jeter is still The Face of Baseball.

Former Yankee Lou Piniella, who manages the Cubs, is going to retire at the end of the season.

GM Brian Cashman said that the trade market is “dead” right now for the Yankees.

Albaladejo has been tearing it up in Triple-A this season. In 41 games, he has a 2-1 record, a 0.96 ERA, 61 K’s, and 12 BB’s in 46.2 innings. He’s done it by going from a sinker-baller to using a more traditional fastball and relying more on control. He gave up a run last night, so obviously he’s still going to struggle, but we have yet to see if his strong 2010 numbers will translate to the majors.
