Tyler Colvin "Ty's" Ike Davis For MLB Rookie Lead In Home Runs

Metszilla.comJul 20, 2010

With a home run Monday night, Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin tied Mets first basemen Ike Davis for the rookie lead in that category with 13.  Davis just missed his 14th of the season in Sunday’s contest with S.F. during the 10th inning off Brian Wilson .  Ike had to settle for a blast off the bricks in right, which turned out to be the game-winning double.

Offensively, Detroit’s Brennan Boesch is having the best all-around campaign of any rookie, sporting a .329 avg with 50 RBI, but he plays in the AL.  So is the path clear for Davis to make a serious run at NL Rookie of the Year?  How Jason Heyward responds to his recent thumb injury will dictate whether or not his name gains more steam in the conversation, and with the way former Seminole Buster Posey has hit since being called up (.353 avg, 8 HR’s in 153 AB’s), the Giants catcher can’t be ignored.  Then of course there’s the aforementioned C olvin of the Cubs and Gaby Sanchez of Florida who are also quietly putting together fine offensive campaigns.  However, when you consider that Davis came up in late April and immediately legitimized the clean-up spot for the Mets when they needed it most, I’m not sure there is a more valuable offensive rookie in the league.
