Philadelphia Eagles: How Kevin Kolb Will Change the Face of the Offense

Lauren ReidJul 19, 2010

With centerpiece Donovan McNabb's exit from the team, the offense has been left in the hands of the barely qualified backup quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Kolb's career has been lackluster, but he has had a chance to show off his capabilities. He became the first quarterback to throw over 300 yards in his first two career starts, and has been named the next starting quarterback for the Eagles for a reason.

Predictions for Kolb's success are mixed.

The biggest change Eagles players and fans can expect to see is less movement from their quarterback. Unlike McNabb, one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the league, Kolb prefers to launch quick, timely throws to his receivers.

Recievers also may want to spend more time in the weight room than the offensive line. The line shouldn't have too much to worry about in protecting Kolb. Kolb is a simple, fast-paced quarterback good at making quick decisions.

However, receivers may have something to worry about. Players like DeSean Jackson should be prepared to throw their bodies across the middle, which they may not be used to.

During McNabb's tenure, opposing defenses were often stretched, thanks to his mobility. Kolb's reign will have a different look, forcing some receivers to sacrifice their bodies at times.

One thing the offense can be sure to rely on is Kolb's accuracy, which is easily his strongest asset. Kolb's deep game isn't as impressive as McNabb's, but count on him to make up for it with his accuracy.

While the Eagles are sure to have a different look this upcoming season, change can be a good thing. With the proper adjustments Kolb has the abilities to excel with the Eagles and take them places McNabb seemed to be unable to.
