MLB Trade Rumors: New York Yankees to Join Chase For Ted Lilly?

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago suggested yesterday that following the loss of  Andy Pettitte (out 4-5 weeks with a groin strain) the Yankees are likely to throw their hats into the Ted Lilly sweepstakes.  According to Levine:

"

Lilly, who will pitch for the Cubs on Wednesday, is being actively pursued by teams such as the Detroit Tigers , Minnesota Twins , New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers . If Pettitte’s injury is serious, you can add the Yankees to that list.”

In his blog ‘Cubbies Crib’ author Jordan Campbell says the Cubs may be looking for a young catcher in return for Lilly:

"

It appears that the Cubs may be looking for a young catcher in any package for Ted Lilly . As they have been linked to Josh Thole of the Mets, Wilson Ramos of the Twins (however it appears unlikely that the Twins are going to trade him), and now Jesus Montero of the Yankees.”

It certainly appears as though the price for Lilly is on the rise and that simply is not good news for the Mets.  I can’t see giving up Thole in a deal for him and I am beginning to think the time to pounce on acquiring the lefty, who is 3-8 with a 4.07 ERA this season, has quickly passed.  As I posted the other day:

I really felt the team should have tried to buy low after a few bad starts by the lefty but that may be too late.  In his first start since the All-Star break Lilly worked 7 innings and struck out 10 while giving up 4 hits and 3 runs against the Phillies.”
