Rangers Prospect Preview: Rookie Goalies Impress at Prospect Camp

Nick PerriJul 18, 2010

In the previous two days I’ve written about Rangers' top prospects on offense, and defense. As the title reads, today I will preview a few rookie goaltenders in the Rangers organization.

Goaltending won’t be a huge need for the Rangers until Henrik Lundqvist retires, of course. But it would be nice to know who the Rangers have in their organization to take over after “King” Henrik is no longer a Ranger. Here I go…

3. G- Cam Talbot: The 6’3” 200-pound Caledonia, Ontario native was signed to an entry-level contract with the Rangers after his college season ended. Last season Talbot posted a 12-18-3 record for Alabama-Huntsville College. I don’t know much about Talbot, but from what I’ve read he’s a pretty good goaltender. Obviously he won’t be in the NHL for a while, but may play in the AHL next season for Hartford.

2. G- Chad Johnson: Johnson has proved that he can play in the NHL, as he has made an appearance in five games for the Rangers. He holds a career record of 1-2-1 with a 2.35 GAA. If you remember, he was extremely close to a shutout in his first career win. He held a shutout into the third period until Cody Mcleod scored a rebound goal against him. That was the same night Gaborik scored an amazing hat trick. Johnson will probably spend a couple of seasons in Hartford, and when Biron's contract expires, Johnson should be ready to back up Henrik Lundqvist.

1. G-Scott Stajcer: The 140th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft turned many heads at the Rangers prospect camps. Stajcer put up some pretty good numbers for the Owen Sound Attack last season. He posted a record of 21-23-6 with a GAA of 3.67, and a save percentage of .897. Those are pretty good numbers for a team that is not very good. Stajcer is still a long way from playing in the NHL. But if he can continue to play well, and get better through his play in the minor leagues, he should be able to take over the starting job after Henrik retires.

Well there it is. Like I’ve said in the past, I understand if you, the readers, disagree with my choices. If you do, leave a response below. Anyways, thanks for the read, I hope you enjoyed.
