Brett Favre: Should the Minnesota Vikings Move on?

Christina De NicolaJul 16, 2010

Shakespeare once wrote that "Parting is such sweet sorrow."

Should the Minnesota Vikings consider those words and see where things lead them by moving on without Brett Favre?

The 40-year-old quarterback has drawn out the situation for months at a time for the past three offseasons.

Will he return, or will he retire?

Reporters camp outside of Louisiana high school football fields hoping to get an answer out of the one-time Super Bowl champion.

Not even his team knows what he will do.

When Juliet spoke about parting to Romeo, her conflicting emotions confused her.

The same could be said about the Vikings.

Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are Favre's backup quarterbacks. Jackson has been in the NFL for five seasons with just 320 completions and 21 touchdowns.

He was Minnesota's starter in 2007 for 12 games, where he threw for a career-high 1,911 yards and nine touchdowns. However, he was also intercepted 12 times.

Rosenfels, on the other hand, is a veteran backup of 10 seasons. The 32-year-old quarterback didn't attempt a pass last season.

Without the three-time MVP, one of them would have to step up as the starter. Unless, of course, Minnesota had enough time to look for a serviceable replacement.

Does the organization even have a backup plan in case one of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks decides to retire?

Following Favre's ESPY win, the 11-time Pro Bowler told ESPN's Hannah Storm that his recovery from ankle surgery hasn't gone as quickly as he expected.

At the moment he can walk, but "You don't walk in football."

With much of his game based on his ability to move around in the pocket, how would this injury affect his play?

Sure, he has one of the league's best backs in Adrian Peterson. In addition, Bryant McKinnie protects him at tackle.

He also completes passes to Percy Harvin, a speedy weapon heading into just his second NFL season, as well as Sidney Rice.

But how much will his body be able to withstand during a 16-game (or more) season?

With the New York Jets, he faded down the stretch as the Miami Dolphins leapfrogged their rival into the playoffs.

Last season, the Vikings lost in the NFC Championship game to the eventual champions, the New Orleans Saints. Within striking distance of a game-winning field goal as regulation dwindled down, Favre threw an interception that set up overtime.

It's time for Minnesota to make a decision rather than wait on what Favre wants to do.

"That I shall say good night till it be morrow."
