NHL: Who Should Wear the "C" for Their Teams This Season?

Bleacher ReportJul 29, 2008

With a lot of different players moving to different teams during the offseason, some teams have been left with no captain, and some won't have one until the start of training camp.

The reason is because of players like Mats Sundin. If Sundin does return to the Maple Leafs, he will most likely remain captain.

Below I have listed one player for each team with no set captain who I think should be captain, along with an explanation.

Anaheim Scott Niedermayer

Niedermayer was stripped of the captaincy last season because of his on again off again retirement saga.

Scott is perfect for captaincy because he would help all of the young up-and-coming players develop, and help give them confidence.

Atlanta Ilya Kovalchuk

With Bobby Holik now gone, there is no real good leader on the Thrashers other than Kovalchuk. He is one of the younger players on the team and could remain captain for a long time if they can keep him there.

BuffaloJason Pominville

Jason Pominville is one of the most talented American players in the NHL today. He is also kind of like Ilya Kovalchuk in the sense that if Buffalo can keep him around he could become full time captain for a while.

ChicagoJonathan Toews

Toews will become captain of the Chicago Black Hawks this season. I think that Chicago will keep Toews around for a while and he will stay captain for at least the next six to eight years. Kudos are due to Dale Tallon and Denis Savard.

ColoradoJoe Sakic/Darcy Tucker

If Sakic does not return to the Avs next season I think that Tucker should wear the "C." He was a proven leader with Toronto and that could carry over to Colorado.

FloridaRostislav Olesz

Olesz just re-signed long term with Florida. Teams usually look for long term captains, and that is exactly what Olesz could be. He is the only good leader that is there long term. Bouwmeester would have been my choice but he is only signed for one year.

Los AngelesDerek Armstrong

It is the same situation as Florida. With the departure of Rob Blake, Derek would be perfect to take over the job.

MinnesotaPavol Demitra

Rolston is gone and Demitra has just signed a new contract; it's time to give him the C.

New York RangersRyan Callahan

One of my old teachers is Callahan's cousin, and says that he is really supportive. If he could carry that over to the ice/dressing room then that's great for the Rangers.

PhiladelphiaMike Richards

Last season he wore the 'A' and with captain Jason Smith off to the Sens this could be the beginning of the Mike Richards era.

St. LouisDavid Backes

Backes is going to be in St. Louis for a while, and he is a good player. Why not make him captain?

TorontoMatt Stajan

If Sundin does not return to the Maple Leafs, Stajan would be perfect. He does interviews all the time and is a good player, just what you need from a captain.

VancouverPavol Demitra

Pavol is new, yes, but he is a proven leader with Minnesota.

If you disagree then please post your comments below.
