Should the New York Rangers Just Forget About Dan Girardi?

Nick PerriJul 6, 2010

As we all know Dan Girardi filed for salary arbitration last night. So should the Rangers just forget about him? Obviously he feels that he is worth more than the Rangers are offering, which sounds like it’s around the $2million range. I don’t know how much Girardi wants, but he is anywhere close to being a $3million player. Honestly, I don’t really think I’d give him $2.5million. When the arbitrator sits down and takes a look at his stats, he will be comparing them to someone who is making around the same amount of money as him, and someone who is making a little bit more then him. As a comparison, I’m going to use his teammate Marc Staal.

Yes, I know Marc Staal is worth much more than Girardi, but it would still be a good player to compare him (Girardi) with. Here are the numbers from the past season:

GIRARDI

2009-10:  goals (6) assists (18) points (24) PIMS (53) Average Ice-time (21:29)

STAAL

2009-10: goals (8) assists (19) point (27) PIMS (44) Average Ice-time (23:08)

If you breakdown the stats, Staal was obviously the better player. Girardi, though, was the rougher player of the two as he amassed 9 more Penalty Min’s then Staal did. But the number that really says it all is the Average Ice-time. Marc Staal played, on average, about 2 minutes more than Girardi. A stats that I didn’t put, was total ice-time. Marc Staal played a total of 1,897 minutes, and Girardi 1,762 minutes. Again Marc Staal is on top. So if a player that is worth $4million (Staal) amasses better numbers in multiple categories then someone who believes their worth about that much (Girardi) obviously something is wrong. When looking at Girardi stats, and comparing them to those of Marc Staal, I think you can tell Girardi is not a $4million player. If I were the arbitrator at most I would give Girardi is $2.5million. No more than that. But, we will just have to wait and see what really happens. Leave any opinions of yours in the comment section below. Thanks for the read, hope you enjoyed.
