Justin Rose Eagles the Ninth on Way To AT&T National Win

Thomas MorelandJul 4, 2010

Justin Rose has a five shot lead with nine to play in the final round at the AT&T National.

Let's call it and go have a beer.

Rose has been unchallenged by a weak PGA field and will win this event easily.

Yes, there are nine holes left, but this one's in the refrigerator.

The light's off and the butter's cooling.

Ryan Moore, Jeff Overton, and Charlie Wi, who has just birdied 11 and is at minus eight, are battling for second place. JB Holmes is also at minus six, and still hanging in there, but the big hitter is running out of holes.

Moore and Overton are at minus seven, only four back, while all of a sudden Wi is just three away from our eventual tournament winner. I think.

News Flash

Justin Rose just bogeyed the 10th to drop to minus 10. This is not the US Open or a major, so the pressure should not be a factor.

Play your game and two putt these incredible greens and that's a winner, Justin Rose.

Rose just blew his birdie attempt eight feet by, while Wi now has a four footer for a second birdie in a row.

Deja Vu is happening to Justin Rose right before our eyes. The lead could easily shrink to two after it was five shots just two holes ago.

Rose had gone 270 holes in a row without a three putt, and now he has two in a row following another bogey. Rose has dropped to 10 under, just two ahead of Charlie Wi.

After Rose's eagle, I thought this was a wrap. But geez louise, holy moly, and wait a minute, Charlie. Your still in this thing.

Wi now has a tricky downhill four footer to cut the lead to just one. Wi could not read the putt and pulls it left, however.

Rose is very lucky to have a two shot lead after making the turn with a five stroke advantage.

Shades of Pebble Beach misgivings cloud the mind as you search for answers on the tee, Justin Rose. Can you just focus on each hole, as they come one at a time?

Ryan Moore is quietly three under for the day, and now at minus seven for the tournament. He is still in the hunt on the 14th tee.

Rose has played a decent round of golf today and can't let a couple of three putts bother him. He puts the ball safely on the green at 12.

I believe if Justin Rose can win today, he will become the only other player besides Tiger Woods to win Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods hosted tournaments, although this year is kind of unofficial for Tiger's host duties at the AT&T National.

Wi is now at number 13 with a tricky 15 footer for birdie. He pounded it six feet past, and missed the line on that one.

Some of these greens are wickedly deceptive.

Wi stays at two shots behind and continues to the 14th tee. He pars in three and moves to 15.

J.B. Holmes has just posted minus six to finish in fifth place, so far. Rose has made par and continues along, hoping for one more birdie somewhere.

Ryan Moore just completed 15 with a par and stays at minus seven for the tournament.

Rose has a makable birdie putt on the par three, but he misses and has to settle for par.

The 16th hole is a par five, and this might be the swing hole for this tournament. Leaving the hole without a birdie is like giving a stroke to almost every player.

The 16th has given up just as many birdies as strokes to par the entire tournament.

Rose is safely on the edge of the par four 500 yard 15th hole.

Wi safely two putts for his par on 15 and moves on to the par five 16th.

Ryan Moore hits a great chip shot on 16th, just missing a birdie and is just two back now, tied with Charlie Wi at minus eight. Moore is four under today.

Despite Justin Rose's double three putt on nine and 10, he is steady enough tee to green to win this tournament. Another two putt at 15 and Rose is on to the par five.

Carl Peterson just made a nice birdie to move back to minus five after a 39 stroke front nine. Peterson is currently in sixth, one behind J.B. Holmes who is in the clubhouse at minus six.

Rose is in the rough to the left of the 16th fairway and won't reach in two.

Moore is on a roll with another birdie on 17, and is now just one shot back. That's five under today with the 18th left to play. Wow!

Just a one shot lead as Rose really needs to birdie 16.

Jeff Overton is putting for eagle on 16 and he leaves it four feet short. He's minus eight and two shots back.

Wi only manages a par on 16 and that really hurt his chances to win today.

Moore will have to save par from the bunker on 18 to post nine under par, and put just a tiny bit of heat on Rose.

Rose has about a 15 footer for birdie on 16 to possibly seal the deal on today's see-saw action at the AT&T National.

It looks like Rose will only par 16 as well, so it's still two good holes to victory for Justin Rose, and second in the Fed-Ex Cup standings for the season. Rose just made a par.

Moore rams his par putt home from 12 feet to post nine under, low score in the clubhouse.

Wi is still at eight under as he makes par on 17. He remains two shots down.

Overton smokes his putt five feet past the hole and needs to get the comeback putt to stay two shots back, which he does.

Rose safely lands on the 17th green, and needs a par, par finish to win.

We could have a playoff if Justin Rose has any kind of a hiccup on the final hole.

Wi and Overton desperately need at least a birdie to get to that nine under that Moore has already posted.

Overeton hit a huge drive on 18, and only has a wedge left to the green. Wi hit a fairway wood off the tee and is quite further back.

Rose has a tester to remain at minus 10, and take that one shot lead to 18. He makes that short putt perfectly.

Overton has about a 20 foot putt to pull within one shot of Rose. Overton has two seconds and a third this season and will break through soon, by the looks of things.

Overton just missed and comes in at eight under, tied for third.

Wi has a 12 foot putt to save par at 18, and will not win this week. Looks like a fourth for Wi as he finishes with a bogey and minus seven.

Rose hit a perfect drive on 18 and is one shot away from the win, hitting 15 out of 18 greens in regulation today. He's also putted well for most of the tournament.

114 yards is what Justin Rose has, as he tries to control his adrenaline coming in. Rose has a two putt left to win two tournaments in four weeks going into St. Andrews and the British Open.

Rose wins. And til next time, have a fantastic week.
