6/26 Z-Cap: Punished By Pavano
With all the attention on Johan Santana’s 1st start against his former team, it was another Twins pitcher, Carl Pavano, who stole the show. Pavano walked into Citi Field and flat out shut down the Mets offense. There will be no talk of Jose Reyes or David Wright this afternoon as they combined to go 0-8. Only Jeff Francouer (2-3) and Rod Barajas (1-3) were able to get hits off Pavano, who finished with his first complete game shutout (9IP, 3H, 0ER) since June 5 of last year. This marks the second straight game Carl ‘The Stache’ has gone the distance (6/20 vs. Philly) and one can’t help but wonder if that fur on his lip has some sort of magical powers.
For the Mets, Johan Santana continues to utterly frustrate fans by allowing one bad inning to completely ruin an otherwise fine outing. Much like the 4-run 3rd inning that spoiled his start last Sunday against the Yankees, Johan’s funk once again hit him early on, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits in the 1st. Santana went on to give up only 1 run over the next 5 innings but the Mets offense was never able to get anything going vs. Pavano.
