Los Angeles Angels Kendry Morales Set For Surgery June 10th.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced before Tuesday night's game that first baseman Kendry Morales has been scheduled to have his broken ankle and tibia surgically repaired on Thursday, June 10.
According to Scioscia, Morales is anxious to get on with the surgery and rehabilitation started.
Scioscia told the media “I think he’s disappointed, but he’s come to grips with understanding the process of the surgery. We’ve really reinforced the idea that he’s got to really listen to the doctors. It’s going to take time. You can’t rush it. I think he’s anxious to get this surgery and get into the rehab.”
Dr. Lewis Yocum believes that once the surgery is performed it will be an around 4-6 weeks before he can put weight on the leg. It will take additional time to strengthen the leg before resuming baseball activities. Dr. Phillip Kwong will be performing the procedure. It is likely Morales will have metal screws or a rod inserted to keep his tibia in place.
The Angels have no time table for his return but a comparison could be made to Juan Rivera. While Rivera's break was more serious (two broken bones in lower leg), his injury occurred during Winter Ball in December 2006 and Rivera was able to return to the Angels for only 14 September games in the 2007 season. He was recovered physically for the 2008 season but he did not regain his effectiveness on the field fully until the 2009 season.
With Morales' injury not as severe and him being two years younger than Rivera was at the time of the injury the Angels are holding out hope their slugger can return for the stretch run.
