Right away, let’s take out the far inside horses for both the odds and the evens. Neither Dave In Dixie nor Spangled Star is winning this race without a miracle, as neither have proven that they can run at this type of distance even against significantly lesser competition. Truth be told, Stay Put is most likely in that same bunch.

The best thing that the even horses have going for them is Ice Box. The favorite in this race is going to probably go off somewhere right around 4-1 at post-time, and many are probably going to jump on the even colts just for this reason. It’s true that the Kentucky Derby runner up is a tantalizing prospect, but let’s take a look at what is around him.

Make Music For Me could be an intriguing horse that improves mightily from his run in the Kentucky Derby if he can get a clean run. He is a potential upset in the making from a closer’s role, but he is going to have to outduel Ice Box with the exact same tactic.

Both Game On Dude and Interactif were afterthoughts that were entered into this race by their respect trainers. Both Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher know that they have already made their killing in this Triple Crown, as Pletcher trained Super Saver to a win at the Kentucky Derby, while Baffert bounced any idea of a Triple Crown by taking Lookin At Lucky to the winner’s circle at the Preakness Stakes two weeks later.

On the other side of the coin, both Fly Down and Drosselmeyer have experience on this track having run in the Dwyer last month. Fly Down won the race, but Drosselmeyer was the odds on favorite. Both should be considered legitimate contenders.

Stately Victor is a nice throw in for the odd horses, though we don’t believe that he is going to be significantly improved from his eighth place run in the Kentucky Derby at the Belmont.

The wild card horse that we also get in this bunch is First Dude, the runner up from the Preakness Stakes.

We thought that this was a Belmont contender right away when we saw him run, as this was a horse that clearly had a lot left in the tank after finishing the 1 3/16 miles at Pimlico. There’s a good reason that he is the second favorite to take down the third leg of the Triple Crown.
