The New York Mets are 17-5 During Jose Reyes' Hot Streaks

Flushing Baseball DailyJun 2, 2010

In terms of OPS+, Jose Reyes has been the second worst offensive contributor behind Luis Castillo this season with a 73 OPS+. Lately he is turning that around and has been one of the better contributors on the team. The only thing is, for that to matter he’s going to have to keep it going.

Reyes had a 9-game hitting streak snapped last night. In that stretch he was batting .462 with a 1.206 OPS. Going back even further, Reyes has a .417 average and a 1.076 OPS over his last 11 games not counting last night.

The problem is that he was at least as bad in the beginning of the season than he is good now. That is natural as he was coming off quite a long stint on the DL, but what if this current streak, that has technically already ended, is just that—a streak.

Then the Mets are in trouble because what’s more impressive than Reyes’ numbers when he is going well, is the team’s record. During his recent 11 game hot stretch the team went 7-4. At the end of April he also had an 11 game hot streak where he put up a .317 average and a .817 OPS. During that streak the Mets were 10-1. So looking at two hot streaks Reyes had this year, the Mets went 17-5 in those games. Very impressive.

So we have to hope that last night’s 0-fer was not the start of another slump because if the Mets are 17-5 when Reyes is hot that puts them 10-21 when he’s cold.

Hopefully Jose Reyes stays hot.
