Fantasy Baseball Week in Review: May 24-30
What a great week it was in fantasy baseball. We saw a little bit of everything.
If you like offense, we saw two guys hit three home runs in a game. And if you like pitching, we saw a guy throw a perfect game.
Here are the fantasy studs, the players who have me concerned, and the potential pickups from the week of May 24 to May 30.

Fantasy Studs
David Ortiz: .391/3/9/.483
Talk of the demise of Big Papi was a little premature. Ortiz had a huge month in May and is driving the ball to all fields.
Miguel Cabrera: .615/4/8
Cabrera was one of the players who hit three home runs in a game and is having a phenomenal season so far. He will be an MVP favorite if he keeps this up.
Albert Pujols: .364/4/9/.483
Many wondered what was going on with Pujols after hitting only two home runs in the first 29 days of the month. Then he hit three home runs on Sunday.
Jose Reyes: .500/1/7 with three SBs
Reyes got off to a really slow start to the season since being activated from the DL but is really starting to come on. Reyes raised his average 24 points last week.
Rickie Weeks: .360/3/6/.429
Weeks is the NL version of Howie Kendrick. The potential is there, and one of these years he is bound to reach it. More so with Weeks, health is a concern.
Brett Cecil: 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 10 K’s in 15 IP
The 23-year-old is really coming into his own in 2010. Last week, Cecil tore through the Angels and the Orioles. He is now 5-2 on the season, and while he might be on a roll, be careful about his next start; it's against the Yankees.
A.J. Burnett: 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 13 K’s in 13 IP
The Yankees got the good A.J. last week. Burnett was extra good against the Indians as he tossed eight innings of one-run ball.
Jon Lester: 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 14 K’s in 13 IP
Lester’s numbers were pretty similar to Burnett’s. Lester is on a serious roll right now, and is poised to make a run at the Cy Young Award.
Roy Halladay: 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0.00 WHIP, and 11 K’s in nine IP
If you throw a perfect game, then you are automatically a fantasy stud for the week. That is my rule and I am sticking with it.
Jonathan Broxton: Three saves with a 0.00 ERA and four K’s in 3.2 IP
I feel like Broxton always makes this list. Broxton is currently fifth in baseball in saves with 13 and averages 13.30 K’s/9.
Reasons for Concern
Kendry Morales
Morales broke his leg celebrating a walk-off home run on Saturday.
I mean, really?
Morales breaking his leg celebrating a walk-off home run is one of the more bizarre injuries not only in baseball history, but in sports history as well.
Morales may return in September, but it seems unlikely. Morales has zero fantasy value for the remainder of the year.
Grady Sizemore
Sizemore will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss, at the minimum, six to eight weeks. There is a chance that Sizemore might need microfracture surgery and could be done for the year.
If Sizemore needs microfracture surgery, he will have zero value this year. If he is only out six to eight weeks, then he might give you something in August for the stretch run.
Nelson Cruz
Cruz was placed on the 15-day DL yet again with a strained left hamstring. It’s really a shame that he can’t stay healthy. If he could, he would be a top 10, maybe top five fantasy OF.
Many forget Cruz stole 20 bases last year and has seven already this season. With his hamstring issues, I doubt Cruz will be given the green light to steal, which cuts into his value when he returns.
Potential Pickups
John Jaso, C
It looks like Jaso has supplanted Dioner Navarro as the No. 1 catcher in Tampa Bay. Not only is Jaso starting, but he is also hitting in key spots in the Rays’ order. He has spent the majority of the time batting fifth in the Rays’ lineup.
He is a must pickup if you need a catcher.
Neil Walker, 2B
If you need a second baseman, then Walker might be your guy. Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell said Monday that Walker will get the “majority” of starts at second base moving forward.
The former first round pick in 2004 was hitting .321 in Triple-A and has gotten off to a .321 start for the Pirates.
Max Scherzer, SP
Many owners dropped Scherzer after he was demoted to Triple-A a couple of weeks ago. On Sunday, he struck out 14 Oakland A’s in his first start since being called back up.
If he is available in your league, pick him up. He might have figured things out.
Seth Smith, OF
With Dexter Fowler being demoted to Triple-A, it looks like Smith will get the majority of the starts in left for the Colorado Rockies. The kid can hit, so he is worth the pickup.
