Players to Avoid in 2010 Fantasy Football Drafts

James Hatfield May 25, 2010

We all like to write and read about who to target in 2010 in your fantasy football drafts, but what about those players that you should let other teams draft in 2010?

Here is a list of players I am avoiding in 2010:

Jerome Harrison

Montario Hardesty, James Davis, Josh Cribbs, and it's the Browns for goodness sake; please don't be the one who drafts Harrison.  Could he have a great year and prove me wrong?  Of course, but it's highly unlikely as the backfield is extremely loaded and he will split carries and the Browns will ride the hot hand.

He is ranked high in many leagues and he has bust written all over him.  One thing you will notice about this list is I am not high on players who are suspended and who really have to compete for production.

Miles Austin

I imagine I will get hate email on this one, but the deal here is the number of targets in Dallas and Austin's rank in most draft guides.  He is ranked in the top 10 WR's in many guides which is very high for someone on a team that has Witten, Williams, Bryant, Jones, etc. stealing pass targets away from Austin.

If I am going to choose a top 10 WR I need more guarantee's that the WR is the WR1 on the team and will see most of the targets or is on a team with a QB that will toss 4,000+ yards and 40 TD's.  I think Austin will put up good numbers, but my issue is that he is not a top 10 pick for your 2010 draft.  If he is hanging around in round four of your draft then go ahead and snag him, but don't waste a first or second pick on Austin.  You can hate me now.

Jason Witten

I am not a Dallas hater but you are going to see a bunch of Cowboys on this list.  WHY? Well it's just the high average draft position these players are seeing and how much talent is in Dallas.  Dallas is very talented but these players really have to jokey for production; I would rather have a position player who doesn't have to jokey as much for their weekly production.

You need consistency to win championships and my fear is Witten is not going to give you the weekly consistency.  Just go look his stats from last year, now toss in Dez Bryant and you can imagine his production will continue to be up and down.

Matt Schaub

The only reason he is on this list is because I see many draft guides with him in the top five QB's overall.  He deserves to be in the top 10 but not the top five.  The reason is that he did have a great season last season, but he has not shown yearly consistency.

He has all the weapons around him to succeed again this year, but he has a history of injuries and doesn't have a history of 4,000 yard 30 TD seasons.  I see guides with Tom Brady ranked behind Schaub, but Brady shows year in and out he can have the 3,500+ yard 25+ TD every year.  Give me consistency; that is something you should be seeing I am into and that's how you win championships.

Jamaal Charles

Ranked way to high and being taken way too early in drafts.  He is super talented and has shown he can be a beast, so the only reason I am worried about him is that people are taking him way too early.  I have seen him go in first rounds of drafts and that is just way too early with a Thomas Jones in the backfield and a KC offense that is still finding their feet.

I think he will be solid this year, but not worthy of a first round pick in 2010.  The only reason he is on this list is so that you are not the one drafting him in round one, but if he is there late round three then snag him.

Marion Barber

Felix Jones is going to eat into Barber's carries for sure.  Barber is in a crowded backfield and has injury concerns.  I would pass on Barber this year and look elsewhere for a weekly starting RB on your team.

Vincent Jackson

Suspensions equal don't draft in my book; I don't like players that eat up roster space and can't be used for four weeks.  Look elsewhere.

What a bonehead; suspended four to six games equals don't draft in my book.  There will be other options this year for your back-up/starting QB.

Can you say crowded backfield?  Portis is just not in a situation to be a weekly stud for your team.  I know there are people out there who are going to disagree and say he was able to rest a ton last year and now that he is running behind a revamped offense that he can be productive.  This is all true but his average draft pick that I see on guides makes him over rated.

Santonio Holmes

Suspended for four games.   Another theme of the article is to stay away from suspended players, but you already picked up on that.

I am happy to receive hate emails about this list atHattyWaiverWireGuru@HattyWaiverWireGuru.com.

I am also happy to get "you were right" emails at the end of the season too, but no one sends those, right?
