Cleveland Browns Offseason Storyline: No Quarterback Controversy

Brian DiTullioMay 24, 2010

Last week's OTAs are in the books and Colt McCoy still isn't the starting the quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

We should all gather together and sing "Hallelujah!" for this development.

After what seemed like the 10th season in a row where the Browns quarterback situation was "unsettled" to put it mildly, it's nice to see not only a veteran quarterback behind center, but one who performed well, according to reports.

Before anyone stands up and starts screaming, the opening line isn't meant as a knock against McCoy, it's just pointing out McCoy won't be adding an unnecessary layer of drama to the offseason workouts.

If, for whatever reason, McCoy ends up the Browns starting quarterback by the end of the year, everyone should feel confident he got the job either because he earned it, or injuries forced him into the role early.

While the latter situation would be upsetting, at least it wouldn't be because the coaches and front office were waffling over the position like last year.

Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace both reportedly looked sharp in their workouts and drills last week, completing most of their passes. In drills where the defense is pretty much handcuffed, that's a lot more encouraging than last year's workouts, where neither Brady Quinn nor Derek Anderson could get much done.

This also might help on the coaching front, where having a quarterback able to do more on the field will make it easier for certain plays to be called. The team needs its coaches to grow this year as much as it needs the players to.

"Growth" most likely will end up being the buzzword around the Browns in 2010, which hopefully will lead to "victory" on the field this year a lot more than it did last year.

Chris Jennings Update: Jennings will not be charged for his nightclub altercation a few weeks ago. Whether or not this leads to a suspension from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is unknown as Shaun Rogers' case still is pending on Goodell's desk.

The fact he wasn't charged automatically becomes a mark in his favor, but Goodell historically has sided against any player showing up in a police blotter. If Jennings get suspended, it's tough to see it lasting more than one game.
