Jake Delhomme: Another Veteran Quarterback Trying To Revive His Career

Shane Quinn May 23, 2010

Take a look at this photo, you may notice the man standing beside Delhomme. His name is Favre. Brett Favre. Delhomme is joining the list of veteran quarterbacks who has managed to revive their careers with another team. The example I will use is Brett Favre, the poster boy for an aging veteran quarterback revival of successful QB play.

Brett Favre played for the Green Bay Packers for most of his career. His career in Green Bay is the stuff of legend. Favre has set many records in Green Bay and in NFL history books, and most of his records will be not be broken for a long time. The last year Favre played in Green Bay he had passer rating of 95.7 for 28 touchdowns, and 13 Interceptions.

He retired supposedly after the 2007 season, and the Green Bay Packers were ready to move on...or so thought we thought. Favre wasn't really ready to deal with retirement, and wanted to come back to play for the Packers, but the Packers said that they were moving on with Rodgers.

On August 7, 2008, the Packers made a trade with the New York Jets, and traded Favre for a conditional draft pick. Favre had a pretty good season the year before, and much was expected of him in New York.

Favre was doing comfortably well in the first half of the season, throwing for 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Favre in the second half of the season, began to crumble apart, and threw 2 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. The Jets went 9-7 and Eric Mangini was soon fired thereafter.

Many skeptics were wondering if Favre could withstand a whole season again, and on February 11, 2008, Favre retired once again. However, that was short lived as Favre came back out of retirement again and signed with the Minnesota Vikings on August 18, 2009.

Favre started the whole season, had the best completion percentage of his career, had a career-best passer rating, and threw for 4,202 yards and threw 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Of course, Favre had Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian and plus Peterson behind him, but can Delhomme can do well as Favre did in Minnesota? Time will tell but remember Favre had young receivers in Rice, and Berrian. Rice was pretty much on the practice squad in the 2008 season, but with Favre taking center, he caught 83 passes for a career high 1,312 yards.

Perhaps Delhomme won't have a season as good as Favre's last year, but I do know one thing—that Delhomme will surely help the Browns' young receiving corps.
