Chris Johnson and Andre Johnson Want To Get Paid

Chris CiprianoMay 19, 2010

Chris Johnson and Andre Johnson share more than the same last name. They both want new contracts.

And who can blame them. The NFL is a cruel game and you have to get yours when you can because your career could be over at any moment.

However, only one Johnson has a viable case for an extension—that Johnson being Chris.

Chris Johnson, the league's leading rusher last season, currently has three years left on his original five year rookie contract.

He is currently slated to earn $550,000 for the upcoming NFL season. Chump change for a guy who ran for over 2,000 yards last season.

Meanwhile, Andre Johnson will collect $5.8 million this year as part of a six year $60 million extension he signed in 2007. Now, only three years after he signed that extension he is looking to redo his deal again. At the time he signed his extension, his deal set the market for wide receivers.

Also, his cap number for this year is $8.14 million due to bonuses he already received, and that is comparable to the annual average of $10 million that Larry Fitzgerald makes.

Then add in the fact that Johnson’s rookie deal paid him $39 million over six years, a far cry for Chris Johnson’s rookie deal.

Andre Johnson has no one to blame but himself and agent. He’s cashed in not once, but twice and is asking for a new deal while there are guys like Chris Johnson who are trying to get paid for the first time.

If the Titans don’t end up paying Chris Johnson sooner rather than later before this become a problem. He is already skipping voluntary workouts and is threatening to holdout of training camp.

Now, the Titans may use the “30 percent rule ” as an excuse for not to give Johnson an extension, but you can easily get around it like the 49ers did with Patrick Willis.

Even though he lacks leverage, the Titans should do the right thing and pay Chris Johnson.
