The MLB Betting Market through 5/17: May 17th 2010

Handicappers PicksMay 17, 2010

If you look at baseball betting as if it were the stock market, here’s a look at what we’re buying and selling through another week of play on the diamond.

Bullish Squads

Los Angeles Dodgers (6-0, +$687) – No Andre Ethier? No problem. The Dodgers lost their Triple Crown contending right fielder on Saturday to a broken pinkie finger, and they turned around and watched RHP Chad Billingsley throw a gem in a 1-0 victory on Sunday. The road was kind to LA on this trip, as it went 6-0 and now has won seven straight and nine out of ten to sneak back into the NL West race.

Cincinnati Reds (5-1, +$448) - The Reds are suddenly in first place in the NL Central after taking two out of three against the Cardinals over the weekend. Manager Dusty Baker has his boys playing well right now, as they have plated 6.22 runs per game in their L/9 overall. With Milwaukee coming to town with its woeful pitching staff, MLB wagering warriors need to keep their eyes open for some great betting opportunities.

Bearish Squads

St. Louis Cardinals (1-5, -$892) – Ugh, St. Louis, you’re killing us! The Cards were swept at home by the Astros this week and turned around and lost two out of three at the Great American Ballpark. All of a sudden, a team that was four units ahead of the game for the year is down nearly five, which isn’t something that a team that has already laid -300 chalk at home twice this year is capable of doing quickly.

Milwaukee Brewers (0-6, -$690) – The Brew Crew are a wreck right now, especially at home, where they are just 4-14 on the season. Six more defeats at Miller Park came this week, three of which came against both the Braves and Phillies. Perhaps it is a godsend that they are about to hit the road as interleague play gets started.

Player to Buy – Edgar Prado, Atlanta Braves (.367, 3 HRs, 11 RBIs): Atlanta’s second baseman has had himself one heck of an eight day stretch. He has 13 hits in six games to go with 11 ribbies. Prado knocked in three runs on Sunday in a 13-1 romp over Arizona, which extended his streak of games with at least one RBI to three. He is now batting .403 at home this year, which isn’t something that can be ignored, especially for a leadoff hitter. The Braves are going to improve, and Prado is going to be a good chunk of the reason why.

Player to Sell – Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (0-1, 10.80 ERA): Or should we say that Scherzer is now a member of the Toledo Tigers? After giving up six earned runs in five innings of work against the Red Sox on Friday night, the Tigers optioned Scherzer to AAA. It was his fourth straight start in which he failed to throw at least five innings and allowed at least five runs.
