Kansas City and Baltimore may be headed towards a multi player deal
Like anything else in life, there are those who have, and those who have not.
From looking over the Baltimore Ravens roster recently I noticed something interesting. This team is loaded with talent, and their greatest depth is at the positions that the Kansas City Chiefs need the most help, so I thought to myself "why not a trade."
Now, first let me say that the names I mention are by no means superstars, but you don't need superstars to build a great team. Certainly Mr. Pioli lives and dies by that creed. So let's consider the following:
The Baltimore Ravens have a rock solid nose tackle in Kelly Gregg. He may be the glue that holds that very talented defense together. They even made the position even stronger in the drafting of Terrence Cody as his backup. If that's not enough, they also have Haloti Ngata who at 340 lbs, who can also play there in a pinch. If there is one thing this team does not need its any more nose tackles and they have another three on their roster.
The Chiefs need Nose Tackles in the worst way. Want a guy who can take up space, draw the double team, and push the pocket? Try these guys on for size:
Kelly Talavou; 6'2 350 lbs. Sound good?- Also, "unselfish team player"
Lamar Divens; 6'3, 338 lbs. Any better?- "Football is important to him"
Here are two promising nose tackles who may end up without a home, not because they don't have talent, but they don't have any space to display it. Frankly, I think they could both beat out Terrence Cody, but its not likely the Ravens would cut a second round pick.
Lamar Divens came from division 1-AA a year ago at Tennessee State. Kelly Talavou was a mid round pick out of Utah. They both play hard, they both are strong, and they both have no character issues. They are both Pioli types
Now let's talk linebackers. Baltimore has 15 linebackers on their squad. All of them are NFL quality linebackers. 15. A real log jam, so somebody has to go right?
Kansas City could use two of them. What would you like?
I'd like a big run stuffer like Jameel McClain who played at Syracuse. 6'1", 251 lbs. He also produced 10 sacks his one season at Syracuse rushing from the edge. Jason Phillips, their 5th rounder last year I'd consider as well if they like McClain more.
How about a pass rushing outside linebacker that can help out Tamba Hali?
Antwan Barnes sound good too, yet another guy who Baltimore can't find playing time for. Barnes does have issues. He has explosive speed (ran a 4.46 at the combine). He would have to be a situational player. Rotate him with Vrabel on passing downs.
An offensive tackle who can play on the right side for Kansas City?
Jared Gaither? Well he wouldn't come cheap but cheaper than you think. He's already switched sides with Michael Oher.
More likely Oniel Cousins, yet another highly rated and drafted right tackle that just doesn't fit. Cousins has been slow in picking up the playbook. At least, he was coming out of college. David Hale is another sleeper at 6'7, 315 out of Weber State, another 4th round pick by the Ravens
Wide Receiver? There are a few there as well and KC could use a No. 4 or No. 5. Granted the Ravens have Boldin, Mason, Clayton, Reed (the steal of the draft), Stallworth, and four guys at TE that are receiving threats.
How about Marcus Smith? A big talented Wideout drafted out of New Mexico in the 4th round. Really good runner, strong hands, team player, and football is very important to him. That's what Pioli admires. Also is an aggressive blocker and a gunner on special teams. Put him in as WR #4
Now if you are asking what is this going to cost the Chiefs, the answer that much considering the Ravens may be forced, only because of a numbers game, of having to cut ties with these players anyway.
So you give up a couple of mid round picks and throw in a few guys you may not want anyway like Corey Mays. How about a cornerback? That is a huge need for the Ravens because they have only two with NFL starting experience and one of them is coming of knee surgery.
Donald Washington or Maurice Leggett might be available. Maybe both. Many scouts felt Dejuan Morgan should play Cornerback anyway.
The point I'm making is that sometimes you don't have to talk about star players. Some players fly under the radar or haven't had a chance to show what they can do, and what better place to showcase that potential than in Kansas City
We get two nose tackles, an inside run stuffing linebacker, a pass rushing outside linebacker, a starter at right offensive tackle, and even a No. 4 or No. 5 receiver. If you just want the McClain, Divens, Talavou, and Smith thats fine too. Look elsewhere for that Tackle and rusher.
One team's losses is another teams gains and believe me these guys will just end up helping some other team if we don't make the deal. When a team has that kind of a surplus it's a buyers market.
Now the details would have to be worked out but this "minor" deal could end up turning things around in a hurry.
With a surplus of nose tackles and linebackers, Baltimore is the team that should be getting all of the Chiefs attention right now.
Could a deal like this happen?
If Pioli is smart and really cared about what would really be in the best interest of the team, the answer could be yes and other deals like
