Jake Peavy Back on Track?

Andrew GodfreyMay 4, 2010

Jake Peavy won his first game of the 2010 season in his sixth start as the White Sox defeated the Royals 5-1 to move into third place in the AL Central with Peavy striking out nine enroute to the victory.

The White Sox moved into third place in the AL Central behind the pitching of  Jake Peavy who won his first game of the 2010 season throwing seven scoreless innings while striking out nine and walking one in the 5-1 win over the Royals.

Peavy will give a better indication of whether he is back on track when he faces the power hitting Blue Jays on Saturday.

Peavy had allowed 13 runs, 13 hits and walked 12 in the last 10 2/3 innings in his previous two starts.

The win leaves Freddy Garcia as the only White Sox starter without a win in the 2010 season.

Around the Diamond

Ubaldo Jiminez became the first pitcher to win six games this season as he improved his record to 6-0. He currently is leading all three of the Triple Crown categories for NL pitchers with his 6-0 record, his 0.87 ERA and 44 strikeouts.

The most impressive stat to me is that he hasn’t allowed a home run in 41 innings. He has allowed only one run in his last 29 innings and allowed only 11 hits during that span.

Mark Teixeira seemed to be breaking out of his season long slump when he went 4-5 on Sunday but reverted to his old ways Monday with an 0-4 night and dropping his batting average to .181.

Teixeira has only two home runs in 114 plate appearances and has an OPS of .622.

Austin Jackson has taken over the AL batting lead with a .377 average.

Barry Zito is finally pitching like the pitcher the Giants expected they were getting when they signed him to a $126 million contract for seven years before the 2007 season.

The Giants paid Zito $33 million over the last three seasons for a 31-43 record which equaled to more than $1 million a win. This season he is 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA. He has allowed only 20 hits in 35 innings

Opposing hitters are hitting .167 against Zito this season and he has not allowed a home run in 35 innings.
