Why The NBA MVP Award Needs New Voters

Casey CrailMar 22, 2010

The NBA MVP has the same amount of my respect as the NFL Pro Bowl at this point. The last few years has had the winners undeserving, and there was a clear MVP that did not get the award.

Lets rewind three years ago. Dirk was awarded the MVP and there was almost a riot. The clear cut winner was Kobe. 31 ppg, 5 apg, and 5 rpg. Dallas boasted an impressive 67 win season, but Dirk averaged only 24 ppg. This is debatable, but the MVP for the team by definition was Kobe, in a tough Western Conference I would give them a 35 win season without Bryant.

The following year, the hands down MVP was Chris Paul. The winner: Kobe. Many people thought this may have been a make-up call. Paul had 21 points and 11 assist averages while leading his team to a two-seed only one game behind Kobe's Lakers. Like i said about the previous year, without Paul that team would have been terrible, so by definition the Most Valuable Player was hands down CP3.

Last year the award was given to LeBron. This call is debatable, but I think the true MVP was Dwayne Wade. The Miami Heat of last year more than any team would have been terrible without its star. I think that they may have finished with one of the worse records, being led by rookie Michael Beasley and in the second half of the year an aging Jermaine O'Neal. While the Cavs finished with the best record, Wade's numbers were better in points, assists, and blocks over LeBron and Kobe.

I believe this year it is going to be a tough decision between LeBron and Durant. I think that unless the Thunder have a very strong finish that LeBron will be crowned once again. I am a big Durant guy and I think he is the best young talent by a long shot. I think he has a decent resume for the 2010 MVP based simply off his points and rebounds improvements as well as his team's record improvement.

All in all, unless the board of voters is changed, I think for many years to come the NBA MVP will be messed up.
