Derek Anderson Released By Browns...Should The Bills Be Interested?

Brian MazurekMar 9, 2010

Derek Anderson had a so-so career in Cleveland, going 16-18 as a starter for the offensive-challenged Browns.

But he was released today by Cleveland after the Browns' traded for Seattle quarterback/wide receiver Seneca Wallace. Obviously Cleveland General Manager Mike Holmgren preferred Wallace over Anderson.

Now that he's available would Derek Anderson be a good fit in Buffalo since the Bills are so desperately in need of a quarterback?

I think so.

He had no weapons to speak of in Cleveland. No running game, no offensive line and wide receivers who were average at best.

And having to deal with the hometown hero in Brady Quinn had to weigh on him. Once Quinn arrived in Cleveland, Anderson's play diminished. Plus a huge contract Cleveland gave him probably putmore burden on his shoulders to produce and keep the Browns' fans off his back.

Anderson is used to playing in the poor weather Lake Erie produces in November and December. While not overly successful, he knows what to expect with the wicked weather. A big factor. A BIG, BIG FACTOR in my book.

Just think of a couple of warm weather quarterbacks the Bills been through recently...J.P. Losman and Rob Johnson. They never adapted to the tundra of Ralph Wilson Stadium. Warm city quarterbacks.

The best cold weather quarterback in Bills' history...Jim Kelly who hailed from western Pennsylvania. He knew what to expect.

Trent Edwards has proved he can't play in any type of weather and Ryan Fitzpatrick will only be a journeyman quarterback in his career. Brian Brohm? Untested and unproven.

I am sure Anderson would love to come to Buffalo where to has a legitimate shot at being a starting quarterback. What former starting quarterback doesn't want another shot at glory?

And if the Bills can spend $3 million a year on a so-called right tackle in Cornell Green, dump some of your cash into a position that is in dire need of help. Veteran help and a proven quarterback.

My idea? Dump Edwards and Fitzpatrick and let Brohm, Anderson and hopefully a draft pick battle it out for the starting role under center.

While I'd prefer Michael Vick, which doesn't look like it's going to happen, give me Anderson over other notable available quarterbacks such as Jake Delholme.
