Texans Miss Out On Bodden

Brendan ThomasMar 8, 2010

The 2009 Houston Texans were on brink of making the AFC Playoffs but the departure of Dunta Robinson has left a blaring hole in their secondary. The Texans were already looking to add a Free Safety in upcoming draft but they wanted to add a top corner via Free Agency. Former Patriots Corner seemed to be the perfect fit, but reports are indicating that he will be returning to New England. That would be a huge loss for the Texans.

This April's NFL Draft is not a very deep draft when it comes to the Corner Back and the Texans do not want to be put in the position where they need to take a Corner in the 1st round. They have other major needs, they need a Running Back to compliment the "Fumble Happy" Steve Slaton. They need to Defensive Tackle to take pressure off Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye is still only 22 and may end up being a pretty good DT but he isn't there yet. The Texans need Interior Offensive Line help. The Texans need a Free Safety. Another Sure Handed Receiver to take pressure off Andre Johnson would help. They have 8 picks, but they really needed to add  a guy like Bodden leading into the draft to eliminate another need. As much as fans hate to hear it, the Texans have 0 interest in adding a veteran Running Back in Free Agency.

Though it is unlikely, if the Texans wanted to look Corner in the 1st Round here are some places they could look:

Joe Haden (Florida) is a very athletic Corner and he plays physical football but in order to get him the the Texans would have to trade up as he is projected to go very early.

Devin McCourty (Rutgers) could fall into their laps at #20, he is also very physical but he lacks consistency.

Kyle Wilson (Boise State) might still be on the board at #20 but since when do NFL teams look to the WAC for Defensive Backs?

Second Round Prospects Include (more likely fits):

Kareem Jackson (Alabama) would be an absolute steal if he is still around at #51, he is an all around good Defensive player but will likely be gone by #51.

Patrick Robinson (Florida State) is nothing more than an above average Corner, if the Texans go this rout in the draft it will be an example of a "Need over Value" pick which the Texans have been known to do.

Like I hinted at before, The Texans have several needs and I would expect them to go for a Free Safety like Earl Thomas (Texas) or a Running Back.
