Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets: Only Good Things

Alec RogersMar 5, 2010

On a freezing Sunday night, the Jets controlled their own destiny. A victory over the Bengals would get them a bid in the playoffs. The fans came out, the Jets played hard, and they rocked the Bengals, 37-0.

One Sunday later, the Jets met the Bengals in a playoff game in which the Bengals would "try this time." Not hard enough, obviously, as the Jets got the passing game involved and sprung a 24-14 victory in Cincinnati.

All of the sudden, the extreme underdog, wild card Jets were in the AFC Championship against the No. 1 ranked Indianapolis Colts . They fought hard and had a lead just before halftime. The final scoreboard read 30-17 in favor of the Colts. The reason? Secondary.

Don't get me wrong, I not only acknowledge that Darrelle Revis is a great player, but I actually think he is the best CB in the league. Yes, better than Asomugha. Yes, better than Champ Bailey. But who else was there to guard the Colts' massive passing attack? Who knows? Sometimes it's the obselete Lito Shepperd, the anti-clutch performer Dwight Lowery, or the nothing-special Donald Strickland. Either way, it's not working.

This week, the Jets acquire Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie.

The Jets have the best running game in the league and their passing game is under-going renovation. The AFC Championship would have been a completely different game if players such as Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon were covered by a prolific athlete such as Antonio Cromartie. Aside from Revis, the Jets defense becomes unrealistically good. Revis Island is locked down, Cromartie does his work on the other side, and a group of outstanding linebackers are able to guard tight ends and stuff the running attempts.

Cromartie will be a great fit for the Jets and the Jets are even more dangerous now.
