Redskins ink Lorenzo Alexander to new 3 year deal

Mark ButerbaughMar 5, 2010

While the Washington Redskins, led by GM Bruce Allen and HC Mike Shanahan take a new, refreshing approach to free agency, letting bids come to them, instead of the Redskins setting the market and bidding against themselves, they are also taking care of current roster business.

It started last night with news that the Redskins had resigned C Casey Rabach to a 3 year deal a little over $12 million.  This morning word comes that OT/DT/LB Lorenzo Alexander was resigned to a 3 year contract extension as well. Terms have not been disclosed.

Let me just say this.  The moves the Redskins have made, both extensions and player releases, have been quite impressive and refreshing.  Rabach is a solid Center that struggled a bit last season, but you can also chalk that up to him having to help and aid a significantly week right side of the Line.  Lorenzo Alexander is nothing more than a brilliant move.  Why?  Several reasons.  First, he is so versatile, able to play offensive line, defensive line, and this season, even some outside linebacker.  Second, he plays hard, every down.  Third, he has a tremendous attitude, willing to play wherever needed.  In other words, if someone ever asked me to describe what an actual 'true Redskin' as made famous by Joe Gibbs, Alexander would be the perfect example.

The releasing of the ten veteran players yesterday was also bold and refreshing.  Why?  Allena nd Shanahan have clearly set out to remake and rebuild the franchise in their image, and their image does not include a decade of losing.  AS Allen clearly stated yesterday, 'the status quo is not accpetable'.  We absolutely agree.  If some of the players released were your favorites, to get over the sting, just remember that phrase.  These players were part fo the status quo, and to me as a fan, I am sick os losing.

Given the moves made thus far, both extensions and reductions in roster, I place full confidence in Allen and Shanahan and this new approach to building a TEAM compared to building EGOS.
