2010 NFL Mock Draft 3.0: First And Second Rounds With Trades

Robert WayerskiMar 4, 2010

My first post combine mock draft and third version overall. I am switching to regular format instead of a slideshow to be able to do second round analysis. I will also for the first time include trade scenarios.

Round 1:

Pick #1: St Louis Rams - Ndamukong Suh DT (Nebraska)

TOP NEWS

Colts Jaguars Football
Rams Seahawks Football

The Rams add to a defensive line that already has two recent first round picks(Long and Carriker). Suh recorded an impressive 12 sacks this year including four in the biggest game of the season. He is fast and strong and will get pressure on the QB helping his DBs.

Pick #2: Detroit Lions -Gerald McCoy DT (Oklahoma)

McCoy is not as skilled at getting to the QB as Suh but he is very talented and did register 33 tackles for losses over his career. It is also a good landing spot for him as Detroit needs a lot of defensive help and especially on the defensive line.

Pick #3: Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Eric Berry S (Tennessee)

Berry is a ball-hawk type safety which is important in the recently pass-happy NFL. He ended his career at Tennessee with 14 INTs along with three sacks and three forced fumbles.

Pick #4: Washington Redskins - Sam Bradford QB (Oklahoma)

Bradford came in to the combine looking bigger which impressed a lot of scouts. His recent injuries are a concern but Alex Smith came back from the same injury and it is hard to ignore 2008 when Bradford threw 50 TDs and only eight INTs.

Pick #5: *Trade Alert* Cleveland Browns (via KC) - Jimmy Clausen QB (Notre Dame)

Cleveland moves up ahead of Seattle to insure that they get Jimmy Clausen who is the most game ready and maybe the best QB overall. Clausen's completion percentage and passer rating increase every year he was in college and last year he completed and impressive 68.6% of his passes and has a rating of 161.43.

(Kansas City receives Cleveland's first[#7] and third[#71] round picks)

Pick #6: Seattle Seahawks - Russell Okung OT (Oklahoma State)

Okung has long been considered the top OT in this draft and although Bruce Campbell made up some ground during the combine it is hard to ignore the on the field production. His ability to standout in both pass protection and run blocking along with his durability, he started 47 straight to end his college career, make him the best OT in the draft.

Pick #7: Kansas City Chiefs (via Cleveland) - Rolando McClain ILB (Alabama)

Kansas City gets the player that they wanted at number five and get an extra third rounder. McClain is a perfect fit for Kansas City because they run the same 3-4 system that Nick Saban installed at Alabama. McClain is a tackling machine racking up 275 tackles in his three years at Alabama including 105 last year.

Pick #8: Oakland Raiders - Bruce Campbell OT (Maryland)

Campbell become the favorite to be drafted by the Raiders after an impressive combine. His on the field production was not as good as some of the other tackles in this draft but Al Davis loves measurables and he certainly has those. Vernon Davis, another Maryland product, was drafted high because of combine number and has turned into a pro-bowler. Tom Cable's specialty is coaching the OL, so the Raiders might be a good spot for Campbell to reach him potential.

Pick #9: Buffalo Bills - Brian Bulaga OT (Iowa)

With the shocking retirement of Brad Butler, the Bills are in dire need of help at tackle. Anthony Davis' bad showing at the combine solidifies Bulaga as the number two tackle.

Pick #10: Jacksonville Jaguars - Taylor Mays S (USC)

Depth at DB is important anytime you are in a division with Peyton Manning and Matt Schab throwing the ball. He impressed at the combine with his speed and some think that his struggles last year were due to the scheme.

Pick #11: Denver Broncos - Dan Williams DT (Tennessee)

Tennessee players go back-to-back here when Denver decides to shore up their defensive line with Williams. Williams has great size at 327 and is a perfect fit in a 3-4 system.

Pick #12: Miami Dolphins - Jason Pierre-Paul DE/OLB (South Florida)

Pierre-Paul is a gifted athlete who has not been able to translate that into on the field stats. That being said, he has drawn a lot of comparisons to DeMarcus Ware, a player who thrived in a Bill Parcells system. The Dolphins need some help on the outside and Pierre-Paul could fit that with the right coaching. He may not be as ready to play as Sergio Kindle but his upside makes him more valuable.

Pick #13: *Trade Alert* Denver Broncos (via San Francisco) - Dez Bryant WR (Oklahoma State)

The Broncos trade one talented but troubled WR for another. McDaniels is a control freak and will think he can bring in Bryant. Despite his troubles it is hard to ignore the talent. In his last full season (2008) Bryant recorded 87 receptions for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns.

(San Francisco receives WR Brandon Marshall in exchange for first round pick.)

Pick #14: Seattle Seahawks - CJ Spiller RB (Clemson)

Seattle is in desperate need of play-makers on offense and Spiller would provide a needed spark. He would be an instant upgrade over Justin Forsett and Julius Jones. Spiller has a knack for finding the end-zone, he recorded 45 touchdowns in his college career and did it a number of ways. He had touchdowns receiving, rushing and returning kicks.

Pick #15: New York Giants - Joe Haden CB (Florida)

Haden's stock is dropping after running a 4.52 at the combine but film doesn't lie so he will still be drafted here in the middle of the first round by the Giants. If Haden has better game speed than test speed he will be a steal for New York.

Pick #16: Tennessee Titans - Brian Price DT (UCLA)

The Titans have needed an upgrade at DT since Albert Haynesworth left and Price is their guy. He got to the QB seven times last year and has the quickness/size combo to thrive in a 4-3 system.

Pick #17: *Trade Alert* Detroit Lions (via San Francisco) - Mike Iupati OG (Idaho)

The Lions trade ahead of teams like Pittsburgh and Houston to insure that they get the best guard in the draft. Iupati can come in and start at guard for the Lions immediately and has the skills to someday transition to tackle. The Lions have found their franchise QB, now they put another piece in place to protect him.                                     (San Francisco receives the Lions' second[#34], third[#66] and next years' sixth round selections)

Pick #18: Pittsburgh Steelers - Earl Thomas S (Texas)

Thomas has great ball skills and intercepted 10 passes during his time at Texas. He can line up next to Polamalu and provide depth at a position that they Steelers have had recent injury history at.

Pick #19: Atlanta Falcons - Derrick Morgan DE (Georgia Tech)

The Falcons are in need of a DE and Morgan may be the best one in the draft. Morgan had 12 sacks last year and two forced fumbles. He would likely start from day one on the left side of the Falcons defensive line.

Pick #20: Houston Texans - Trent Williams OT (Oklahoma)

The Texans need interior line help and Williams is a great value here because of his ability to play either guard position as well as RT and maybe even fill in at left tackle.

Pick #21: Cincinnati Bengals -Jermaine Gresham TE (Oklahoma)

The Bengals are in need of anyone who can catch a pass and especially a tight end. Gresham had 111 receptions, 1629 yards and 26 TDs in his career including 14 touchdowns last year while spending most of the year with a backup QB.

Pick #22: New England Patriots - Sergio Kindle OLB (Texas)

The Patriots will continue to overhaul their linebacker corp, which is certainly a need considering Junior Seau actually got playing time this year. Kindle only had six sacks this year but two of them cam in a the national championship game and he did have 10 sacks in 2008.

Pick #23: Green Bay Packers - Charles Brown OT (USC)

Brown's athleticism fits perfectly into Green Bay's zone blocking scheme. The Packers need to keep Aaron Rodgers upright and Brown can come in an help immediately.

Pick #24: Philadelphia Eagles - Sean Weatherspoon OLB (Missouri)

Weatherspoon is a great tackler racking up over 100 tackles each of the last three years. He did not have high sack totals but in the Philadelphia defensive scheme he would learn.

Pick #25: Baltimore Ravens - Golden Tate WR (Notre Dame)

Last year the Ravens top receiver was Ray Rice, which means that they need some receiving help. Tate is a great route runner who can also help by returning kicks. He had almost 1,500 yard and 15 TDs last year for the Irish.

Pick #26: Arizona Cardinals - Everson Griffen DE (USC)

Griffen increased his tackle and sack totals this year and can play OLB or DE depending on the situation. He impressed at the combine by running a 4.66 40-yard dash.

Pick #27: Dallas Cowboys - Anthony Davis OT/OG (Rutgers)

Davis is the best offensive lineman left on the board and has a lot of versatility because he can play either guard or tackle. The Cowboys to get younger all along the offensive line. His bad workout at the combine raised concerns over whether he will ever be able to be a LT.

Pick #28: San Diego Chargers - Ryan Mathews RB (Fresno State)

Mathews has great speed and great strength. He will need to work on his pass blocking and pass catching to be an every down back but he certainly has the skills. The combine showed that he was in the top ten in four of the seven drills among running backs.

Pick #29: New York Jets - Kyle Wilson CB (Boise State)

Wilson has great ball skills and speed. Not only did he have 11 career interceptions but he also returned two of them for touchdowns. He will have an immediate impact on special teams.

Pick #30: Minnesota Vikings - Devin McCourty CB (Rutgers)

McCourty has the advantage over other CBs in this draft because he can help immediately in the return game and on the coverage team as a gunner. The Vikings definitely need secondary help.

Pick #31: Indianapolis Colts - Jerry Hughes DE/OLB (TCU)

Hughes has a nose for the QB and also impressed at the combine by running 4.69 40 yard dash. He is a little bit undersized at DE but can play OLB and can fill in at DE where the Colts have traditionally gone with smaller DEs anyway.

Pick #32: New Orleans Saints - Ricky Sapp OLB (Clemson)

Sapp did not have as good of a senior season as expected and his decision not to attend the combine have hurt his stock. He still does have the ability to rush the QB and is very physically talented.

Round 2

Pick #33: Philadelphia Eagles (via the St. Louis Rams) - Maurkice Pouncey OG/C (Florida)

Pouncey offers a lot of flexibility because he can play any of the interior offensive line positions. Depth at O-line will be important when protecting an new starting QB.

(St Louis Rams send pick to Eagles for QB Donavan McNabb)

Pick #34: San Francisco 49ers (via Detroit) - Brandon Graham OLB (Michigan)

A steal in the second round, Graham has recorded 10 sacks each of the last two seasons and will be effective from day one even if it is only as a pass rush specialist.

Pick #35: Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jared Oderick DT (Penn State)

The Bucs missed out on one of the top DTs but get a good one here. A poor combine hurt his stock a little but he still did record six sacks and ten tackles for a loss. He was also named Big Ten defensive player of the year.

Pick #36: Kansas City Chiefs - Aaron Hernandez TE (Florida)

The Chiefs add a tight end who is both a great blocker and pass catcher. They need a real threat at TE that they lost when they traded Tony Gonzalez.

Pick #37: Washington Redskins - Selvish Capers OT (West Virginia)

Capers is a little bit smaller tackle but that works well for Shannahan's zone blocking scheme. The Redskins will need a replacement for the retiring Chris Samuels.

Pick #38: Cleveland Browns - Patrick Robinson CB (Florida State)

The Browns get a CB here who can line up opposite Eric Wright, giving the Browns one of the best young CB tandems in the league. He is very physical but that has not translated to INTs lately, although he did have six interceptions two years ago.

Pick #39: Oakland Raiders - Carlos Dunlap DE (Florida)

The Raiders need to upgrade both the offensive and defensive lines. They took care of the O-line in the first round and will take care of the defense in the second. Dunlap is a talented DE who has dropped because of off of the field issues. He got to the QB nine times each of the last two years.

Pick #40: Seattle Seahawks - Colt McCoy QB (Texas)

McCoy is an athletic QB like Matt Hasselbeck and his skills fit the west coast system that Pete Carroll is bringing in.

Pick #41: Buffalo Bills - Brandon Spikes MLB (Florida)

The Bills are low on LBs and Spikes is a hard hitting one. His lack of speed has turned some teams away but at this point in the draft he is a bargain.

Pick #42: Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Mardy Gilyard WR (Cincinnati)

The Buccaneers need to add some offensive weapons for their young developing QB. Gilyard had 11 touchdown reception and also scored on a reverse. He would give the Bucs a game breaking threat at WR.

Pick #43: Miami Dolphins - Terrence Cody DT (Alabama)

Jason Ferguson is aging and Terrence Cody fits in as a prototypical NT for a 3-4. Cody also has versatility because he has played some FB on offense and blocked kicks on special teams.

Pick #44: New England Patriots - Jahvid Best RB (California)

Maroney has largely been a disappointment and Faulk is getting old. Jahvid Best is a versatile back, who is also a talented return man.

Pick #45: Denver Broncos - Tony Pike QB (Cincinnati)

The Broncos saw Kyle Orton's limitations last year and will look to get the QB of the future. Pike is a big QB with a big arm.

Pick #46: New York Giants - Daryl Washington MLB (TCU)

The Giants need to add some talent at LB and Washington is a solid linebacker and a good tackler. He had 109 tackles last year to go along with three interceptions.

Pick #47: New England Patriots - Vladimir Ducasse OG (Massachusetts)

The Patriots took Sebastian Vollmer a couple years ago despite his limited experience playing football. Ducasse is also relatively new to the sport but has all of the required skills to be a successful guard in the league.

Pick #48: Carolina Panthers - Greg Hardy DE (Mississippi)

Hardy is an effective pass rusher and may be a replacement for Julius Peppers in the Panther defense.

Pick #49: San Francisco 49ers - Ciron Black OT (LSU)

Black started at LT for LSU but projects as a RT in the NFL. He would be a good fit for the 49ers because he can come in and start right away at right tackle because of his experience against a high level of competition.

Pick #50: Jacksonville Jaguars (via KC Chiefs) Tim Tebow QB/TE (Florida)

The Jaguars take a local hero in order to sell tickets. They will attempt to develop Tebow as a QB but he can also serve as an H-back or tight end.

(Chiefs recieve pick #74 overall and a 2011 third round pick)

Pick #51: Houston Texans - Jonathan Dwyer RB (Georgia Tech)

The Texans take Dwyer at this point as a thunder to Steve Slaton's lightning. He also is an insurance plan in case Slaton gets injured.

Pick #52: Pittsburgh Steelers - Jon Asamoah OG (Illinois)

The interior of the Steelers line could use some help and Asomoah is the most NFL ready guard on the board. He had good football intelligence and understands his role in a scheme.

Pick #53: New England Patriots - Corey Wootton DE (Northwestern)

The Patriots get a DE who can help rush the passer and will fill the void left by Richard Seymore. Wootton only had four sacks last season but got to the QB 10 times the year before that.

Pick #54: Cincinnati Bengals - Chad Jones S (LSU)

The Bengals need to replace Roy Williams who's contract is up. Chad Jones is the best safety left on the board.

Pick #55: Philadelphia Eagles - Alex Carrington DE (Arkansas State)

Carrington had nine sacks last season and 10 the season before that and even though it came against lower competition his skill set translates to the NFL

Pick #56: Green Bay Packers - Javier Arenas CB (Alabama)

Arenas is a talented CB who also has great return skills. The Packers need to get younger in the secondary.

Pick #57: Baltimore Ravens - Dominique Franks CB (Oklahoma)

Franks has good size for a corner at six feet tall and if he runs a good 40 at his pro day he will solidify himself as a second round pick.

Pick #58: Arizona Cardinals - Rob Gronkowski TE (Arizona)

The Cardinals get a safety valve for new starting QB and take a local kid. At 6'6" he provides a large target and while he does not have great speed, it is adequate when combine with his size.

Pick #59: Dallas Cowboys - Syd'Quan Thompson CB (California)

The Cowboys are starting to age in the secondary and need to add some younger help. Thompson lacks ideal size but has been effective on the field at Cal.

Pick #60: San Diego Chargers - Jason Fox OT (Miami)

The Chargers need to add a RT in the draft and Jason Fox is a talented tackle. His stock has taken a little bit of a drop because of a knee injury. He started at left and right tackle in college but likely can only start at RT in the NFL.

Pick #61: New York Jets - Navarro Bowman OLB (Penn State)

The Jets need to get some LB help on the opposite Calvin Pace on the outside. Vernon Gholston has not worked out in this role. Bowman lacks idea size to be an outside linebacker in the 3-4 but has good sideline to sideline speed and could be effective.

Pick #62: Minnesota Vikings - Cam Thomas DT (North Carolina)

Pat Williams may be back for another year but they will need a replacement for him so they need to start grooming one now. Thomas is a very strong DT and put up 225 on the bench press 31 times.

Pick #63: Indianapolis Colts - Akwasi Owusu-Ansah DB (Indiana PA)

Owusu-Ansah impressed the scouts at the combine with his speed. He can be an in-the-box, run stuffing safety like Bob Sanders but can also fill in at corner because of his speed. His versatility will make him attractive to the Colts who have had a lot of injuries recently in the secondary.

Pick #64: New Orleans Saints - Koa Misi DE (Utah)

Misi is not the most flashy football player but is a solid football player who can come in and contribute immediately on special teams.
