Lebron James To The New York Knicks? Not So Fast!
If you have watched ESPN in the past 3 years you have heard them constantly talking about LeBron James(pictured above), Forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers, going to the New York Knicks following the end of this season. As a fan of LeBron, this is becoming overwhelmingly annoying.
There are simple facts involved in this rumor that make it extremely hard to believe. James grew up in the Cleveland area, the majority of his family still live in the Cleveland area, and he has been very involved in the Cleveland community.
Now after those simple non basketball facts have been thought through you then have to look at the basketball facts. James might have more control over his team than any other player in the NBA. He is consulted on every team decision that is made by the Cavaliers front office. There is no way that the owners of the New York Knicks or any other team would give him that same power.
Also look at the records of both teams at the moment in the NBA season. The Cavaliers record is 46-14 and the Knicks are 20-38. During the seasons that James has been in the NBA the Cavaliers record has been 334-218 and the Knicks have been 203-347. The Cavaliers have won 35 or more games every year that James has played. The Knicks on the other hand hasn't had a season with more than 35 wins since James rookie year.
Along those lines the Knicks have 18 loses this season by 10 or more points including a 50 point lose to the Dallas Mavericks at home. Why would the best player in the NBA right now want to play for a franchise that is struggling as much as the Knicks have been?
Some would say for the money and the endorsements that he might receive by playing in one of the largest markets in the United States but the argument could be made that if the Cavaliers make the Finals this year and with part of the Cavaliers being bought by a China organization that LeBron could be looking at the same kind of deals he would be looking at in New York.
If money truly is a factor for James then the contacted money would be a big deal and the team that can provide James with the largest contact is.....the Cavaliers with the Larry Bird exception. This exception allows teams to sign a what would be free agent to a maximum contact even if it would put them over the salary cap as long as the player has played three seasons without being waived or changing teams through free agency.
All that being said there has yet to be anyone that has come up with a solid legitimate reason as to why LeBron James would leave a very successful and contending organization to play for a poorly run and bottom dweller organization. There are many reasons for him to stay a Cavalier and it seems as though everyone at ESPN has forgotten that
