In possibly the biggest event in the Winter Olympics there was a great story unfolding before the games began, and all the trash talk started that the American Olympic hockey team was viewed to fall early in the Olympics and having little to no shot even at the Bronze. But just like 30 years ago in Lake Placid, this American team would show heart and determination.

The long run started with a 3-1 win over Switzerland and a 6-1 domination over Norway. Then came the monster and host of the Olympics Canada, and now America was in a David vs. Goliath matchup. America was not supposed to stand a chance to the Canadians but America would not listen. Team USA would end up shocking Canada, the Olympics, and the entire world with a 5-3 win.

For America, they would be in a rematch with Switzerland and a chance at a No. 1 seed an odd place for America to be. Canada however was facing elimination against a tough Russian team. America did not score much but shutout and beat Switzerland again while Canada hammered Russia 7-1.

The US team was just one win away from the gold medal game, something nobody would have guessed before the start of the Olympics. Canada was facing Slovakia and needed to hang on late against a rally for a 3-2 win. America dominated another team in Finland 6-1.

Now the stage was set but if you were to look at the past games you would think America was the powerhouse and Canada was trying to be the little team that could. The first part of the game was total domination by Canada taking a 2-0 lead before the end of the second period. Late in the second period America would score to cut the lead to one.

The third would be classified as heart attack for both teams with America not scoring until very late in the game. In fact, there were only :24 seconds left in the game a true miracle. America was trying to pull another miracle on ice while a win would not be as big as the 1980 game it would still be huge.

Overtime would show America's fault with the puck being in their zone almost 90 percent of the period. With 7:40 left in overtime Crosby would take his shot and crush the dreams of Americans everywhere.

This run however brought back something that has been missing in this country, American Pride. For a while all I was hearing from many Americans was that they thought it would be better in Europe or Canada but when America went on their run the pride came back larger than ever before.

While Canada had taken the gold in hockey America is still winning the overall medals with 37, Germany is second with 30, and Canada is third with 25.
