Caps and Penguins, What a Hockey Game!

Nucks IceManFeb 8, 2010

Here it was: around noon time in Washington and the place was rockin'! I couldn’t believe the atmosphere. It was like a playoff game as the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins met to do battle. And battle they did.

That is by far the best game I have watched this year, with both stars, Ovie and Sid the Kid, displaying why they will be nominations for the Hart Trophy.

There was speed galore as they went back and forth and made hits that rocked the glass all afternoon long. I was glued to the tube as I could not believe what I was watching. It was hockey at its purest.

It had it all!

Crosby staked the Penguins to a 2-0 lead before Ovie answered. At one point in the second period, it was 4-1 for Pittsburgh. Capital Fehr scored to draw the Caps to within two at a score of 4-2; and you just knew Washington would come out flying in the third.

Pittsburgh had played the night before, and with the snowstorm, had problems making it to Washington. In fact, it took around nine hours to get there, so they arrived at approximately 2:00AM. Let’s not forget that this was a nooner, so you could figure that the Penguins might be a bit tired come the third period.

Not only did the Capitals take over, but Ovie put on the show of the year as he scored two goals to tie it up. What a game he had! Causing problems all over the ice, throwing hits left and right, making plays...he’s the real deal, this guy.

Here’s a complete player: he scores (is the NHL leader with 42), skates like the wind, is tough to knock off his skates, and leads the Caps in hits with 139, which is also near the top in the NHL! When he got going, he just seemed to pull the rest of the Caps with him in his jet stream.

Also remarkable is how many times the Caps have been down going into the third period and have come back to win the game. By my count, it's nine times, although that figure is unconfirmed.

Having tied the game up, Ovie was still not satisfied; he also potted the winner as Caps fans blew the roof off of the Verizon Centre. Three goals, count 'em. That was as mind blowing a performance as I have seen from a player in quite awhile.

Alexander Ovechkin, one of a kind, showed everyone why he will be the next MVP!

Now you can watch it in case you missed it.
