The Big Ticket Is About To Leap The Worm
Kevin Garnett is about to break the top 20 for all time rebounds grabbed without much fanfare. He has snuck up on Denis Rodman’s 11,954 mark which denotes his ascent into top 20 territory. KG only needs three to tie Rodman and four to bump him out of that elite group. Kage should grab those boards at home against Orlando Sunday afternoon.
After he passes The Worm he will continue his assault on the greats with Charles Oakley in his sights, who barring an unlikely return to the NBA (he professed his intentions of trying to make a team in 2007 at age 44) will be locked in with his 12,205 career mark.
Garnett’s yearly average has dropped down considerably since joining the Celtics. His last year with Minnesota he collected 975 boards to just 655 in the championship year. A staggering drop off to say the least and injuries kept him from even grabbing 500 boards last year. His high water mark was in the03-04 season when he cleaned up with 1,139.
If KG continues with nagging injuries I don’t think he will be able to crack the top ten where Wes Unseld has that spot on lock with 13,769. I’m not saying it’s impossible but it is indeed rarified air when you start talking about The Chief and The Mailman, not to mention the untouchable Wilt(23,924)/Russlle(21,620)one two punch that reside at the summit of rebound mountain.
For now, passing Rodman is a feet unto itself. Congratulations KG, keep cleaning that glass.
