Caps rout Islanders 7-2, extend win streak to 7

Mark ButerbaughJan 26, 2010

The Washington Capitals high octane, super charged offense didย notย take a night off, as the Capitals offensive attack tallied 7 goals in the Big Apple to crush the NY Islanders 7-2.

As a familiarity to this season, the Caps jumped on their opponent in the first period, scoring 4 goals in the opening salvo. ย It didn't take long either. ย Brendan Morrison deflected in a strike from John Erskine just 1:05 into the game to give the Caps a 1-0 lead. ย It was Morrison's first goal in the month of January, ending his scoring drought. ย It was also the first point of a two point night for John Erskine. ย Three and a half minutes later, Alexander Semin struck unassisted for his 22 goal of the season to give the Caps a 2-0 lead. ย Rob Schemp then followed that up and wrecked the three game streak the Caps had in perfect penalty killing, scoring on a power play to pull the Isles to within 1, 2-1. ย The Caps then rallied for two late first period goals to put the Caps up 4-1. ย Mike Knuble scored a little over the 18 minute mark on the Caps power play. ย It was Knuble's 15th of the season and his 3rd power play tally. ย Alexander Semin then struck again, unassisted once more, for his 23rd goal, a thing of beauty to the net, with just 5 seconds left in the first period.

John Erskine scored the first goal of the second period to give the Caps a 5-1 lead. ย It was Erskine's first goal of the season, his first gaol since 2008, and his second point of the night. ย  It was also Erskine's first 2 point game this season and first 2 point game since March 2009. ย Overall, Erskine had one fine game, tallying a goal and an assist and finishing +3. ย Kyle Okposo scored for the Isles to pull within 3. ย Three minutes over the half way mark of the second period, Jason Chimera scored on a nifty slapper to put it past Isles second goal tender of the night, Rick DiPietro. Brooks Laich ended the Capital barrage with the only goal of the third period. ย It was Liach's 15th of the season.
