Caps Prospect Update (As of Jan. 14)

Joel Broda:  The Capitals selected Broda in the 5th round of the 2008 NHL Draft.  Broda is currently 19 years old and playing junior hockey in the Western Hockey League for the Calgary Hitmen, Karl Alzner’s former stomping grounds.  Broda has played in 41 games this season and has 21 goals and 24 assists. 11 of his 21 goals have come on the power play. He is a +1, as well.

Greg Burke: Greg Burke was selected in the 6th round of the 2008 NHL draft.  Burke is a freshman at the University of New Hampshire.  He has played in 16 games for the Wildcats, recording 1 goal and 6 assists and a -2 rating.

John Carlson:  John Carlson was a 1st round pick of the 2008 NHL draft. Carlson is another super prospect in the Caps system (on most accounts, the No. 1 prospoct) that is considered to be NHL ready.  In fact, The Hockey News just named Carlson the No. 1 prospect in the AHL. [LINK]  Carlson leads the Hershey Bears defensemen in scoring-in 32 games, he has 1 goal and 24 assists and a +17 rating. Carlson also saw action with the Capitals for 3 games. He is additionally the leading Bears defensive scorer.  Carlson also helped lift Team USA to the Gold in the World Junior Championships, scoring twice in the Gold matchup against team Canada, including the game winner.  In 7 games, Carlson had 4 goals and 3 assists, and was a +8.  Overall, Carlson is 5th in points in the AHL coming defensemen and 1st overall among AHL defensemen in assists.
