Bruins and Flyers Face off in Winter Classic

Tyler BlouinJan 1, 2010

Happy New Year everyone! Today we're treated to the once-a-year extravaganza of the Winter Classic when the Boston Bruins face the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park. The snow has been falling to provide a picturesque setting for one of hockey's growing traditions. Prior Winter Classics in Chicago at Wrigley Field and Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium has provided hockey fans with a taste of outdoor nostalgia; watching the world's top talent play on an outdoor surface in the driving snow.

The Flyers have recently turned around their free-fall in the Eastern Conference standings with 4 wins in a row. Much of the credit can be attributed to the strong play of recent waiver pickup Michael Leighton. Leighton, who was picked up from Carolina once 'Canes goalie Cam Ward returned from his leg injury, is 4-0-0 with a 1.70 GAA and a .943 save percentage in five games since joining the Flyers.

No official word on who's starting for the Bruins, though rookie sensation Tuukka Rask is coming off a 18 save shutout against the Thrashers on Wednesday. Boston sits second in the Northeaster Division with 47 points, five points behind the Buffalo Sabres.

Game time is 1:00pm Eastern and can be seen on NBC in the States and CBC in Canada.
