Braves Trade Javier Vazquez to Yankees for Melky Cabrera, Pair of Prospects

Cameron BrittDec 22, 2009

So...I guess this means no one wanted Derek Lowe?

In a move that shocked me, the Atlanta Braves dealt Javier Vazquez (along with Boone Logan) to his former team for Melky Cabrera and a pair of pitching prospects.

Wow.

Just, wow.

I don't want to say I'm disappointed in the deal, since the Braves basically acquired something similar Julio Teheran in Arodys Vizcaino (less than 20, power arm), but I was just hoping to see more of a MLB-impact player (Nick Swisher...ahem... maybe an above average INF prospect for Minor League depth in an area of weakness) than either of Melky Cabrera or lefty reliever Mike Dunn (24).

Granted, Cabrera (25) is a switch-hitter that fields well and hit .274 this past season, but he only belted 13 homers last season and definitely does not help fill the power void Atlanta has in its outfield.

A Cabrera, McLouth, Heyward/Diaz outfield will be one of the most athletic in the NL, if nothing else.

But, time will tell whether this was a good move or not.

If Cabrera performs well in the National League and Dunn and Vizcaino can make an impact within the next three years, then you have to like this move for the Braves.

However, if Vazquez performs well above his career American League numbers in New York and either of the two prospects completely flop, then you have to applaud Brian Cashman for swindling Frank Wren and his posse.

I'm hoping for the first with all my heart.

Let's hope that the Braves use this $10.5 million saved from Vazquez (and 500K coming from the Yankees) to fill the void at first by either signing a primo free agent with pop or trading for a high "paycheck" player (possibility).

But, once again, just wow.

And let's hope Derek Lowe can walk back across the bridge he burned with the sour comments he made a couple of days ago.
