Lost Conversations From the MLB Winter Meetings

Aided by the emergence of Twitter and aggregation sites such as MLBTradeRumors.com, the annual tradition that is the MLB Winter Meetings has become a blizzard of information and rumors.  Everywhere you look there are published reports of another trade that is “in the works”, a free agent signing is close, or that Scott Boras is still trying to convince himself that Matt Holliday is getting Mark Teixiera money.  It’s baseball action without a single pitch being thrown. 

But even with reporters crawling over one another to get scoops, it’s still inevitable that some conversations between agents and GMs slip through the cracks and don’t trickle down to the public.  For that we have JSF, here to report on the things overhead at the MLB Winter Meetings…

“Watch this, I bet I can get Cashman to pay six figures for an old Mike Piazza Diamond Kind card.” – Scott Boras

“You guys got to fly here? My owner bought me a bus ticket.” – Dayton Moore, Royals GM###MORE###

“Do you think that the offer of a free Cubs gym bag with any trade for Milton Bradley will spark some interest?” – Jim Hendry, Cubs GM

“I can’t remember if the old man told me he had to have Holliday or Halladay.  Oh well, we’ll just get both and then I won’t have to worry about it.” – Brian Cashman, Yankees GM

“Be honest with me.  Would you give me more inside information if I still had my mustache?” – Jayson Stark, ESPN

“We just traded for that Twins pitcher named after the chick in Teen Wolf.  Boof something.  I’m taking the rest of the day off.” – Theo Epstein, Red Sox GM

“Part of the reason I left ESPN is to be closer to Boston because I love the community.  And it doesn’t hurt that Theo Epstein is positively dreamy.” – Peter Gammons, formerly of ESPN
