SummerSlam is the second-most important pay-per-view on WWE's yearly schedule, and it is essential that the company books interesting and entertaining storylines to get wrestling fans excited.

Despite WWE Creative's lack of ability in telling convincing stories or building strong characters, there is enough talent on the Raw and SmackDown brands to provide the company with the chance to book an unforgettable show.

Here are the most intriguing storylines wrestling fans should be tracking on the road to the 2021 edition of SummerSlam.

Who Will Dethrone Roman Reigns?

The top storyline on WWE television is Roman Reigns' dominance over the Universal Championship scene. Between Reigns' feuds with the likes of Daniel Bryan and Cesaro and his family issues with Jimmy and Jey Uso, the champion's segments are always must-see TV.

The question heading into the summer is which Superstar will step up to challenge the champion at the August PPV. Instead of another match with Cesaro or elevating a fresh face from NXT, WWE could be looking to book John Cena to challenge the Tribal Chief.

Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc) recently hinted that Cena could be returning to WWE programming, and the best natural fit would be for him to come in as the triumphant face ready to vanquish the dastardly heel.

Instead of Cena burying another up-and-coming talent, though, Reigns should dominate the former face of the company in the main event of SummerSlam to assert his dominance over the main roster.

Will Brock Lesnar Return?

One of the biggest question marks coming into 2021 was Brock Lesnar's status with WWE. The former world champion has not been seen since WrestleMania 36, but the return of fans to the stands could be a sign he will soon be back.

According to Andrew Zarian of The Mat Men Podcast (h/t WrestlingNews.co), WWE has been planning to bring back Lesnar once coronavirus-related restrictions were lifted and the company was able to hit the road again.

Zarian reported the plan has been to wait until SummerSlam for Lesnar's return match, which is exactly what Raw needs. While Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley have been great in their roles, the WWE Championship scene has grown stagnant.

Lesnar's return would add instant intrigue to both the red brand and the SummerSlam card, something WWE desperately needs as Raw's ratings continue to plummet.

When Will Sasha Banks Get Her Rematch?

The WrestleMania 37 Night 1 main event between Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks was a historic matchup that created as much history as it did magic. With that said, the WWE Universe is wondering when Banks will get her rematch.

The Boss should remain on the sidelines until she's ready for Chapter 2 against Belair at SummerSlam. During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, the SmackDown women's champion said she is "fully expecting a rematch."

After the chemistry Belair and Banks showed at WrestleMania and because of the unwavering support of fans, WWE Creative should realize the magnitude of a potential rematch and save it for the company's second-most important show.

Belair vs. Banks II would be a marquee addition to the card and worthy of the main event spot.
