Updated 2021 NFL Draft Order After Sunday's Week 13 Results

Joe TanseyDec 7, 2020

One of the most puzzling decisions of the 2020 NFL season allowed the New York Jets to remain on top of the projected 2021 NFL draft board after Week 13's Sunday games.

Instead of protecting the end zone with a majority of their defenders, the Jets sent pressure that led to Henry Ruggs III being wide open on the Las Vegas Raiders' game-winning touchdown.

For most of Sunday, the Jets looked like they might lose out on the driver's seat in the competition to pick first in April.

New York put up an impressive fight against the Raiders but eventually remained winless and four defeats away from the No. 1 overall pick.

The Jacksonville Jaguars fluctuated between competition for the top pick and a victory as well on Sunday, but they could not pull out a win in overtime against the Minnesota Vikings.

Even though the two worst teams in the NFL generated some excitement on Sunday, the projected draft order remains exactly as it was going into Week 13 at the top.

New York's questionable call to blitz in a "Hail Mary" situation was something that has not been seen in the NFL this season, and for quite some time.

NFL Next Gen Stats outlined the dynamic of the play in which three defenders dropped back in man coverage.

One of those players was beaten by Ruggs, a speedy rookie out of Alabama, on the game-winning play.

ESPN's Adam Schefter further outlined the uniqueness of the defensive call. He cited ESPN Stats and Info research:

At that juncture of the afternoon, a stop with five seconds left would have changed the race for the top selection in next year's draft.

Jacksonville went on a game-tying scoring drive at the end of its fourth quarter against Minnesota, but because it was down eight points, its best result at the end of regulation was a tie.

The Jaguars ended up losing their 11th game of 2020 in overtime, and if the Jets held on to the lead, the two franchises would have been tied for the worst record in the league.

Instead, the Jets hold a one-game advantage for the No. 1 overall pick with four games remaining on the schedule.

Adam Gase's team has a good chance of finishing 0-16 since it faces four teams in playoff contention to close the regular season.

Three of the Jets' last four games come on the road, starting with back-to-back cross-coast trips to face the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams.

New York's final game against the New England Patriots may decide the Jets' draft position and the Patriots' playoff fate if they continue to string together victories.

Jacksonville could be in the same situation on the final Sunday of the regular season, as it takes on the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jags have a chance to play spoiler in the AFC wild-card race with the Colts, Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens left on the docket.

Even if Doug Marrone's team wins one game, it could stay second in the draft order due to the early-season tie earned by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Cincinnati sits at 2-9-1 after its defeat to the Miami Dolphins, while Jacksonville resides at 1-11. The Jags would have to win twice and have the Bengals lose out to drop in the draft order.

However, wins could be hard to come by in December for the league's worst teams. All of the franchises currently slated to pick in the top 10 that played on Sunday lost. Washington plays Monday, Dallas is in action on Tuesday and Carolina had a late bye week.
