Updated 2021 NFL Draft Order After Sunday's Week 12 Results

Joe TanseyNov 30, 2020

The New York Jets are one month away from securing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

That continues to be the only positive spin you can put on the team's season that reached another low on Sunday in its second defeat to the Miami Dolphins.

Adam Gase's side looks far less competent than the second-worst team in the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars once again were competitive in Week 12, but they failed to complete a winning performance.

Jacksonville became the latest franchise to part ways with personnel on Sunday, when general manager Dave Caldwell was let go.

No decision has made been yet on Doug Marrone's future, but if a coaching change occurs, the Jags could head in a new direction at quarterback, like the Jets are expected to do.

The Jets have not fired Gase yet, but if they continue to perform poorly, that decision seems like it will happen sooner rather than later.

If a change happens, the new Jets regime will be in line to select Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who starred on Saturday after a month-long layoff.

The Jets produced a single-digit point total for the fourth time this season in Week 12.

Two of those performances have come against the Miami Dolphins, and there is a chance more low totals are ahead in December.

New York's next four opponents are involved in the AFC and NFC playoff races, and if the New England Patriots win a few games, they may be added to that list by Week 17.

Before the 20-3 loss on Sunday, the Jets were competitive in matchups with the Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers, but those teams are well out of the playoff race right now.

Week 13's home meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders could be tough to handle if the AFC West squad takes its anger from a blowout loss in Week 12 out on the Jets.

After that, the Jets face a two-game road swing against the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. New York lost four of its first five road contests by 10 or more points.

If the Jets continue to lose, they will have the right to draft Lawrence for a likely new head coach to work with.

Lawrence threw for 403 yards and two touchdowns in the Clemson Tigers' blowout win over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday. He missed one month and four days because of a positive COVID-19 test, a bye week and a postponement.

If the Jets land Lawrence, the Jaguars could be in the market for a new signal-caller at No. 2. Justin Fields, Trey Lance and Zach Wilson are among the players expected to be in the running for the spot behind Lawrence on the quarterback draft rankings.

To secure a top-two pick, the Jaguars need to finish one game worse than the Cincinnati Bengals. Jacksonville can still win once and pick second if Cincinnati loses out because of the Week 3 tie between the Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles.

Jacksonville's five-game December gauntlet begins with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13. Each of its final five opponents are in contention for playoff positions.

The order beneath New York and Jacksonville could change on Monday depending on Philadelphia's result against the Seattle Seahawks.

If the Eagles win, they would jump back into the NFC East lead and move the New York Giants closer to a top 10 pick. A loss would place them into a trio of three-win teams heading into Week 13.
