Obi Toppin to Knicks: No. 8 Pick's Projected Contract with New York
The best college basketball player in 2020 has joined the NBA.
Naismith Men's College Player of the Year Obi Toppin was selected with the No. 8 pick in Wednesday's draft by the New York Knicks, making him the 23rd Dayton product to reach the league.
But before he steps onto the court, there's one bit of business left to take care of: signing his first professional contract.
According to Spotrac, Toppin is expected to sign for $9.9 million guaranteed over two years with two team options.
That should pay off quite well for both the 22-year-old forward and his new team.
Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman ranked Toppin as his No. 5 prospect and expects him to make a smooth transition to the league:
"Only his age (22) and defensive question marks keep him outside the top two or three on draft boards. Toppin's offense seems like a good bet to translate based on his explosiveness around the basket, accurate three-ball through two seasons at Dayton (41.7 percent) and skill level inside the arc.
"His scoring figures to propel Toppin into the Rookie of the Year mix. And though he did struggle at times while guarding the perimeter and reacting in pick-and-roll coverage, he seems mobile, intelligent and hardworking enough to improve over the next few years."
In his final season with the Flyers, Toppin averaged 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 39.0 percent from behind the arc.
If he's able to come close to that type of production with the Knicks, it won't be long until both sides look toward an extension.
