Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete PPR Player Rankings for Week 9
Eight weeks into the fantasy football season, the playoff picture is starting to become clear.
For some managers, that's a good thing. They have been trotting out Davante Adams the past couple of weeks. They had Dalvin Cook during his four-score explosion in Week 8.
They are 6-2 or 5-3 and rolling along toward a postseason berth.
For others, not so much. They have been waiting for Christian McCaffrey or Michael Thomas to get healthy. Or waiting for Lamar Jackson to start producing at 2019 levels.
Those teams are 3-5 or 2-6 and hanging on by the slimmest of threads.
No matter your situation, the goal in Week 9 is the same, and the goal of this column is to help by presenting position-by-position PPR rankings and analysis for the week come.
Time to put some shine on Week 9.
Quarterbacks
1 of 6
It's all about the NFC West, as the top two fantasy signal-callers both hail from that division. After tossing four touchdown passes in Sunday's win over the 49ers, Russell Wilson is on pace to throw for over 4,900 yards and set a new league record for touchdown passes in a season.
In Arizona, Kyler Murray had already rushed for seven scores in as many games and is on pace to come up just shy of 1,000 yards on the ground. Both are averaging over 30 fantasy points per game.
However, fantasy managers who invested a high pick on Lamar Jackson have been disappointed. Halfway into the 2020 campaign, he ranks outside the top 12.
GOOD MATCHUPS
Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills (vs. SEA) (DraftKings DFS Value: $7,000)
After a red-hot start, Allen's fantasy production has dipped of late—he ranks outside the top 10 in fantasy points among quarterbacks over the last four weeks. A matchup with Seattle's leaky defense in Week 9 should be just what the doctor ordered.
Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders (at LAC) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,700)
If this game follows the same script as the Chargers' other recent games, they will race out to a large lead before allowing Carr to throw for approximately all the yards ever in a furious comeback. The Chargers are fifth in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks this season.
BAD MATCHUPS
Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens (at IND) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,900)
Jackson's fantasy managers have been waiting much of the season for him to post the sort of gaudy numbers he put up during last year's MVP season. But there isn't a team in the AFC giving up fewer fantasy points to quarterbacks this season than the Colts.
Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee Titans (vs. CHI) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,300)
Since lighting up the Texans for 366 passing yards and four scores in Week 6, Tannehill's fantasy production has tailed off considerably. That trend isn't likely to be reversed Sunday against one of the worst fantasy matchups this season for quarterbacks.
SLEEPER
Drew Lock, Denver Broncos (at ATL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200)
Lock threw for 248 yards and three scores in last week's wild win over the Chargers, finishing the week as a top-10 fantasy starter. The second-year pro has a good shot at two QB1 weeks in a row against a Falcons defense that has been a sieve most of the season.

Running Backs
2 of 6
It's been a long time coming, but it appears that fantasy managers are going to receive some badly needed good news in Week 9 with Christian McCaffrey's return.
As we saw in Week 8, the return of a big-name running back can provide quite a boost...just ask the folks who got Dalvin Cook back last week ahead of his four-touchdown explosion against the Packers.
GOOD MATCHUPS
James Conner, Pittsburgh Steelers (at DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,900)
Conner is quietly averaging 4.7 yards per carry and is on pace to top 1,100 yards on the ground this season. He could be on the verge of his best game of the season Sunday against a Cowboys defense allowing over 170 yards per game on the ground.
David Johnson, Houston Texans (at JAX) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,600)
Johnson was on a nice little role heading into Houston's Week 8 bye—from Week 5 to Week 7, he was a top-12 fantasy option in the backfield. He should be able to maintain that momentum in a top-five fantasy matchup with the Jaguars.
BAD MATCHUPS
Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys (vs. PIT) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600)
The Steelers were gashed by the Ravens in Week 8, but prior to that game, they weren't allowing even 70 yards per game on the ground. The Cowboys also aren't exactly humming along offensively, and Elliott hasn't hit 100 rushing yards in a game since last season.
Todd Gurley, Atlanta Falcons (vs. DEN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200)
Over the past month, Gurley has been a top-five fantasy running back in PPR scoring systems, largely because of a consistent ability to find the end zone. However, this week's matchup with the Broncos is a tough draw for running backs. Consider Gurley an RB2 in Week 9.
SLEEPER
JaMycal Hasty, San Francisco 49ers (vs. GB) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800)
Heading into Week 8, the Packers led the NFL in PPR points allowed to the running back position. That was before Cook roasted them for well over 200 total yards and four touchdowns. Hasty's coming-out party happens Thursday night.

Wide Receivers
3 of 6
If there's one word that defines the wide receiver position in 2020, it's "ouch."
Kenny Golladay has already been ruled out with a hip injury, and many top guys may be out or limited, including Michael Thomas, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans and Calvin Ridley.
There is, however, one notable wide receiver returning in Week 9.
In both 2015 and 2016, Antonio Brown topped 125 receptions and 1,650 yards while hauling in at least 10 scores. He's 32 now, but his first game with the Bucs is undoubtedly the story among wideouts in Week 9.
GOOD MATCHUPS
Cole Beasley, Buffalo Bills (vs. SEA) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400)
Beasley was quiet last week against the Patriots with just two receptions for 24 yards. But the week before the veteran slot receiver caught 11 passes for over 100 yards, and no team has given up more fantasy points per game to receivers in 2020 than the Seahawks.
DJ Chark Jr., Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. HOU) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200)
Jacksonville's bye week came at a good time for Chark, who has battled nagging injuries of late. Not only should he be well-rested, but the Texans provide a good matchup. Now, if Jake Luton can just get him the ball...
BAD MATCHUPS
Robby Anderson, Carolina Panthers (at KC) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,300)
For most of the 2020 season, Anderson has been fantastic; he ranks inside WR1 territory in 12-team PPR leagues. But coming off a slow game against the Falcons, Anderson draws a bottom-five fantasy matchup with the Chiefs.
Sterling Shepard, New York Giants (vs. WAS) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800)
Whether it's Shepard, Darius Slayton or Golden Tate, none of the Giants wideouts are recommended fantasy plays. Not against a Washington team that ranks at the bottom of the league in PPR points surrendered to the position.
SLEEPER
Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears (at TEN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,900)
Mooney is coming off a good effort in last week's loss to the Saints, hauling in five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. A similar effort in a top-five fantasy matchup for wide receivers this week against the Titans is a possibility.
WEEK 9 WR RANKINGS
- Davante Adams, GB (at SF)
- DeAndre Hopkins, ARZ (vs. MIA)
- Keenan Allen, LAC (vs. LV)
- Julio Jones, ATL (vs. DEN)
- DK Metcalf, SEA (at BUF)
- Adam Thielen, MIN (vs. DET)
- Tyreek Hill, KC (vs. CAR)
- Allen Robinson, CHI (at TEN)
- Tyler Lockett, SEA (at BUF)
- Stefon Diggs, BUF (vs. SEA)

- Terry McLaurin, WAS (vs. NYG)
- Calvin Ridley, ATL (vs. DEN) [INJURED]

Tight Ends
4 of 6
The defending NFC champion 49ers have been decimated by injuries all year, and in Week 8, the worst one of all may have hit them.
The foot injury that knocked George Kittle from Sunday's loss to the Seahawks was serious. So serious, in fact, that he could be lost for the season.
There is some hope the Niners may get veteran Jordan Reed back from injured reserve in Week 9. But that does little to soften a blow that is going to wreck more than a few fantasy football seasons.
GOOD MATCHUPS
Noah Fant, Denver Broncos (at ATL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,600)
Fant hasn't found the end zone since Week 2, but he hauled in a respectable seven grabs for 47 yards last week. This week's matchup is as favorable as matchups get for tight ends—no team has given up more PPR points to the position.
Rob Gronkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. NO) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,900)
As both Gronkowski and Tom Brady have grown acclimated to their new team, their statistical production has increased and stabilized. That means good things this week against a Saints team that has been generous to tight ends.
BAD MATCHUPS
Mark Andrews, Baltimore Ravens (at IND) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800)
With injuries mounting at tight end, there's next to no chance that Andrews won't be started in season-long leagues. But the Colts are still the worst matchup in the league for TEs.
Ross Dwelley, San Francisco 49ers (vs GB) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,800)
If Reed makes it back for Thursday night's game, he gets this slot ahead of Dwelley. The Niners are going to use their tight end no matter who it is, but given this week's bottom-10 fantasy matchup, this has the makings of a bargain play that just isn't a bargain.
SLEEPER
Greg Olsen, Seattle Seahawks (at BUF) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,100)
Olsen hasn't been much of a fantasy factor in 2020, as he hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 1 and has fewer than 75 receiving yards over the past month. But the Bills have been one of the better matchups for opposing tight ends all season. As dart throws go, the 35-year-old is a good one.
WEEK 9 TE RANKINGS
- Travis Kelce, KC (vs. CAR)
- Darren Waller, LV (at LAC)
- Mark Andrews, BAL (at IND)
- Rob Gronkowski, TB (vs. NO)
- Noah Fant, DEN (at ATL)
- Hunter Henry, LAC (vs. LV)
- Eric Ebron, PIT (at DAL)
- Hayden Hurst, ATL (vs. DEN)
- T.J. Hockenson, DET (at MIN)
- Jonnu Smith, TEN (vs. CHI)
- Evan Engram, NYG (at WAS)
- Mike Gesicki, MIA (at ARZ)
- Jimmy Graham, CHI (at TEN)
- Ross Dwelley, SF (vs. GB)
- Jared Cook, NO (at TB)
- Robert Tonyan, GB (at SF)
- Dalton Schultz, DAL (vs. PIT)
- Greg Olsen, SEA (at BUF)
- Trey Burton, IND (vs. BAL)
- Logan Thomas, WAS (vs. NYG)

- Anthony Firkser, TEN (vs. CHI)
- Kyle Rudolph, MIN (vs. DET)
- Tyler Kroft, BUF (vs. SEA)
Kickers/Team Defenses
5 of 6
The Steelers are for real.
They aren't running away with the title of fantasy football's top defense (tied with Colts), but after a great showing in a bad matchup with the Ravens that included four sacks, four takeaways and a defensive touchdown, the Steelers have shown to be matchup-proof.
They lead the AFC with 30 sacks and the NFL in defensive touchdowns, and they draw a Week 9 matchup with a Cowboys team that has been blasted by injuries.
Pittsburgh is the top defensive play of the upcoming week, and it ain't close.
GOOD MATCHUPS
Matt Prater, Detroit Lions (at MIN)
Prater isn't setting the fantasy world on fire—the 36-year-old ranks outside the top-12 options at his position. But eight weeks in, no team has surrendered more fantasy points per game to kickers than Minnesota.
Washington Football Team Defense/Special Teams (vs. NYG) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,400)
Washington might not be a good team overall, but the defense has been quietly solid, especially with sacks. The Giants have surrendered 20 sacks and are tied for the fifth-most giveaways (12) in the NFL.
BAD MATCHUPS
Zane Gonzalez, Arizona Cardinals (vs. MIA)
The Arizona offense is playing well of late, but that hasn't translated to many fantasy points for the team's kicker, as Gonzalez ranks outside the top 15 for the season. The Dolphins are also ranked at the bottom of the league in fantasy points given up to kickers.
Chicago Bears Defense/Special Teams (at TEN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,200)
The Bears have been solid in points and yardage allowed in 2020, but there haven't been a lot of splash plays. They also face a Titans team that is sitting at the bottom of the NFL in fantasy points given up to defenses.
SLEEPER
New York Giants Defense/Special Teams (at WAS) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,100)
The Giants aren't a particularly good defensive football team, but this call is about who the G-Men are playing. Washington ranks 30th in both scoring offense and total offense and sits inside the top 10 in fantasy points given up to team defenses this year.
WEEK 9 K RANKINGS

Top 100 Overall/'Flex' Rankings
6 of 6
If your fantasy team is sitting at 3-5 and you are the underdog in your weekly matchup, it's not the time to trot out a low-ceiling possession receiver. It's time to go for broke with the high-variance deep threat.
If they hit, those might just be the points you need to pull off the upset. If they don't? Well, you were probably going to lose anyway.
Quarterbacks are not included below.
