US Open Tennis 2020: TV Schedule and Tuesday's Afternoon Draw Predictions

Jake RillSep 8, 2020

On Monday, Denis Shapovalov shared a thought that many (if not all) of the players remaining in the 2020 U.S. Open men's single's tournament have likely had at some point over the past few years.

"It's been getting pretty boring with these three guys winning every tournament," he said, according to Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press.

That trio would of course be Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who've combined to win each of the past 13 Grand Slam tournaments. But the streak is guaranteed to end this weekend, as Djokovic was disqualified in the round of 16 for hitting a line judge with a ball, while Nadal and Federer aren't in the tournament.

Shapovalov is in the tourney, though, and he has become the first Canadian man to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals. He's never won a major tournament (nor have any of the other seven men in the last eight), and he'll be back on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday for his next match.

Here's the TV coverage information for Tuesday's action, followed by predictions for how the day's matches will unfold.

Tuesday Predictions

Shapovalov Advances, Along With Zverev

This is the point when Shapovalov would have faced Djokovic, but instead the No. 12 seed will take on No. 20-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta (9 p.m. ET) with a spot in the semifinals on the line. It still won't be an easy match, but it will certainly be a more winnable one.

The Canadian has been busy in this tournament, as none of his first four matches have ended in straight sets. After advancing past the first two rounds with a pair of four-set victories, he defeated No. 19-seeded Taylor Fritz 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Then, on Sunday, he beat seventh-seeded David Goffin 6-7 (0-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

That's a lot of resiliency he has had to show, and it should help him in the quarterfinals, although he has a quick turnaround by playing on back-to-back days. But he'll also need to play better than he has against Carreno Busta in the past, as he's lost to the 29-year-old Spaniard in three of their previous four head-to-head matches, including the 2017 U.S. Open.

But Shapovalov has gained a lot of experience and continues to get better, as this is already the furthest he's advanced at a major tournament.

It should be a competitive match, but that should just work in Shapovalov's favor. He'll continue his impressive run by avenging a pair of 2019 losses to Carreno Busta by advancing to the semifinals.

Who will Shapovalov face once he gets to the last four? That will likely be No. 5 seed Alexander Zverev, who is set to face No. 27-seeded Borna Coric on Tuesday (2 p.m. ET).

The German has won each of his first three tournament matches in four sets, but he made quick work of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the round of 16, winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. The 23-year-old made his first semifinals appearance at a major tournament earlier this year at the Australian Open, and he should defeat Coric to get there again in New York.

And with Djokovic no longer in the bracket, Zverev could even be in a strong position to make his first finals appearance at a Grand Slam event later this week.

Osaka Wins Big, Enters Semis as Heavy Favorite

The path has cleared for Naomi Osaka to make a deep run in this year's U.S. Open women's singles tournament. She still needs to take care of business, of course, but the 22-year-old may not face a top challenger until the final.

On Tuesday, the No. 4 seed is set to play unseeded Shelby Rogers in the quarterfinals (7 p.m. ET).

Rogers is coming off an impressive three-set victory over No. 6-seeded Petra Kvitova, a match that included a pair of tiebreakers. However, the 27-year-old has never made it past the last eight at a major tournament.

Osaka has been nursing a left hamstring injury, but that hasn't stopped her from winning. In fact, she's coming off her strongest performance yet, after beating No. 14 seed Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 6-4.

Rogers' run has been impressive, but this is where it comes to an end. Osaka hasn't won a Grand Slam title since claiming the first two of her career at consecutive major events (2018 U.S. Open and 2019 Australian Open), and she's on a mission to capture another. She'll beat the American, likely in straight sets, to advance to the semifinals.

As for the other quarterfinal matchup taking place Tuesday, No. 23-seeded Yulia Putintseva will take on No. 28 seed Jennifer Brady (noon ET). Karolina Pliskova could have been in this matchup, but she was upset in the second round by Caroline Garcia, who then lost to Brady.

Brady, 25, has been on a roll to open the tournament, winning each of her first four matches in straight sets, including a round-of-16 victory over No. 17-seeded Angelique Kerber.

Meanwhile, Putintseva's past two matches have gone to three sets, but she's coming off her most impressive victory, a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over No. 8-seeded Petra Martic.

This match is one that could go either way, but the prediction here is that the American continues her impressive run with a hard-fought victory.

However, either one of these women will go on to lose to Osaka in the semifinals. In fact, there may be only one woman capable of stopping the Japanese player. And that's No. 3-seeded Serena Williams, who remains in pursuit of her record-tying 24th career Grand Slam title.
