US Open Tennis 2026 Results, Day 2 Bracket Winners, Losers, Highlights and Day 3 Schedule

On Monday, Carlos Alcaraz began his US Open title defense with a straight-set win over Roman Safiullin.

The 23-year-old had not played a singles match since mid-April due to a wrist injury but showed no signs of rust in his return.

Top-ranked American Ben Shelton was also in action and defeated Tallon Griekspoor in four sets.

In the women's draw, Aryna Sabalenka kickstarted her quest for a third straight US Open title with a straight-set win over Camila Osorio, while Naomi Osaka narrowly defeated Anastasia Zakharova.

Carlos Alcaraz looked stellar in his return to tennis, defeating Roman Safiullin in straight sets.

The defending champion entered the US Open on the heels of a four-month-long absence due to a wrist injury.

However, Alcaraz alleviated concerns rather quickly, impressing with his forehand and top-tier fitness.

Though Alcaraz did not hit his serve at top speeds, he saved 5 of 6 break points and dominated at the net, winning 19 of 24 points.

In other action, Stefanos Tsitsipas upset Arthur Fils in four sets, earning his first top 10 win at a major since 2022.

Fils had entered off the heels of winning the Cincinnati Open and was considered a strong contender to win the US Open.

However, Tsitsipas played impressive tennis, showing why he was a top-3 player in 2021.

In the final men's match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Ben Shelton defeated Tallon Griekspoor in four sets.

Shelton started slowly, dropping the first set in just 29 minutes after making 14 unforced errors.

However, he quickly regained his rhythm and dominated on serve while committing just two unforced errors to even the match.

But the third set was anything but routine, as both players traded service holds, leading to a tie-breaker where Shelton did more than enough to emerge.

That proved vital for the top-ranked American, who secured an early break in the fourth set and then held serve comfortably to seal the win.

Taylor Fritz enters the US Open with hopes of reaching a Grand Slam final for the second time in his career.

The 28-year-old American has played quite well on the hard-court swing this summer, winning the Citi Open while reaching the quarterfinal at the Cincinnati Open.

Fritz possesses the tools necessary for another deep run with his booming serve and heavy groundstrokes.

American compatriot Darwin Blanch can also do damage with his serve and heavy forehand; however, he has struggled to pile up consistent results as of late, making the prospects of pulling off an upset of this caliber extremely unlikely.

Aryna Sabalenka opened up her title defense with a straight-set win over Camila Osorio.

Despite entering the tournament in shakier form than usual, the world No. 1 performed as expected.

Sabalenka dictated the match on her first serve while dominating with her signature aggressive-yet-consistent baseline play.

In the second set, Osorio had moments where it looked like she could potentially force a third set.

However, she failed to convert on three of four breakpoint opportunities as Sabalenka continued to overwhelm her with her booming groundstrokes.

Four-time major champion Naomi Osaka defeated Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets to move into the second round.

Osaka built a quick 5-2 lead, but Zakharova fought back with aggressive play and excellent shot-making, winning four games in a row.

Osaka regained control by breaking back and narrowly taking the tiebreaker 8-6.

In the second set, Zakharova broke Osaka's serve when trailing 5-3 to force another tiebreak.

Similar to the first-set tiebreaker, Osaka's strong serve and composure helped her escape unscathed and avoid what would have likely been a grueling third set.

The 22-year-old appears to be a strong contender for her second US Open title.

Considering her current form, Gauff should not face too many troubles against Zeynep Sonmez.

Sonmez can make this a difficult match with her consistency and court movement; however, Gauff should have more than enough to advance in straight sets.
