Ovechkin's Absence Displays Washington's Other Star Players

Eric LaForgeNov 12, 2009

When you think of the Washington Capitals, you automatically think of Alexander Ovechkin. You can’t really talk about one without talking about the other.

A couple weeks ago, Washington’s star player was sidelined with an upper body injury that hasn’t appeared to be serious. However, the thing that everybody wanted to see was what the Washington offense would do without their star forward.

What ended up happening impressed everybody. The Caps have played a grand total of 5 games without Alex Ovechkin (including the one where he was injured). With the exception of the game against New Jersey, the Caps have scored 4 or more goals in every game so far.

Really, Ovechkin’s absence hasn’t done much to take away from the club. They are still scoring goals and playing good hockey.

The biggest thing that this is showing the Cap’s fans is the depth that the team has acquired for the last few years. We’re starting to see players like Semin and Laich produce goals for the club and Backstrom can’t stop getting assists.

In fact, without Alex Ovechkin, the Caps still have the most goals out of every team in the NHL with 68. They are 5 goals ahead of second place San Jose.

The Caps are going to have a great season this year with Alex Ovechkin and they can still have a great season without Alex Ovechkin. However, I think they would rather have Ovechkin on the ice, but it’s always nice to know that your team doesn’t rely on one player.
