As the WWE Universe prepares for the 2020 edition of the Royal Rumble, rumors are swirling about what could happen at the big event.

From the chatter that WWE officials are bringing Io Shirai to the main roster to keep her happy, to the possibility of seeing a pair of WWE Hall of Famers make their in-ring return, this year's pay-per-view on January 26 is shaping up to be unforgettable.

As the excitement levels continue to rise, here are the latest rumors about the Royal Rumble.

Io Shirai Coming to Main Roster?

1 of 3

Despite being one of the most popular Superstars on the NXT roster right now, Io Shirai is reportedly frustrated by her position on WWE's developmental brand. Will Shirai be coming to the main roster during the Royal Rumble to appease her demands?

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t, Shirai's NXT pay is "nothing special," especially when considering she was making more money and working fewer dates with Stardom in Japan.

Meltzer said Stardom is looking to bring back Shirai and WWE women's tag team champion Kairi Sane, but WWE officials could bring Shirai up to the main roster soon to improve her pay and increase the likelihood she will stay.

If the company is genuinely looking to do everything in its power to keep Shirai under contract, letting her debut on the main roster at the Royal Rumble would go a long way in showing her there is a future outside the walls of Full Sail University.

Brian Cage Not Signing with AEW?

After a wild week of conflicting reports regarding the contract status of Brian Cage, WWE fans are hoping the free agent signs with the company and makes his surprise debut in the Royal Rumble match.

Despite a report that Cage had already signed with AEW, something his wife Melissa Santos denied on social media, PWInsider's Mike Johnson said (h/t said the former Impact Wrestling champion is "mulling over offers from several promotions."

While Meltzer said Cage to AEW is a lock, the timing of his free agency could be a major coup for WWE, as it could use all the surprises it can book for the 30-man Battle Royal. Adding Cage would result in a huge pop from the Houston crowd.

Cage may not be the most well-known wrestler in the world right now, but his size and raw athleticism would make him a welcomed addition to the WWE roster. A possible interaction with Brock Lesnar should have all wrestling fans salivating.

Harlem Heat at Royal Rumble?

3 of 3

One of the best parts of any Royal Rumble PPV is the surprise returns, but recent reports suggest Booker T and his brother Stevie Ray—known collectively as Harlem Heat—could be reuniting in WWE.

According to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson, both members of Harlem Heat have been teasing a match against Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder of The Revival for the last several weeks, and Vince McMahon could be behind the war of words.

With Booker T's notoriety in Houston, Johnson said Vince could use the match as an "undercard thing or a kickoff match." In recent days, WWE has filed a trademark for the Harlem Heat tag team name and Booker T claimed he was ready for another match during an episode of WWE Backstage.

The Revival is one of the best tag teams in the world today, but there has been speculation they could be departing from WWE in the coming months. If the company wants to ensure they stay, putting them in a marquee match against Hall of Famers like Harlem Heat could help the history buffs stay put moving forward.
