Bayern Munich have reportedly opened talks with Manchester City regarding a summer move for Germany international Leroy Sane.

The Bundesliga giants have been given permission to speak to the 23-year-old's representatives "with a view to agreeing contractual terms," according to Duncan Castles at the Daily Record.

The Premier League champions would prefer to keep hold of the Germany international but director of football Txiki Begiristian "has told friends he may be forced to sell in the coming window."

Sane has helped Manchester City retain their Premier League crown this season and win the Carabao Cup but is not first-choice for manager Pep Guardiola.

The German has only started 21 Premier League matches for the champions but has 10 goals and 10 assists in the top flight this season.

Opta highlighted his effectiveness for the Citizens:

Manchester City have offered a contract extension to the 23-year-old but have been frustrated in their efforts because his mother, Regina Weber, "has proven to be 'difficult,'" according to Goal's Sam Lee.

Manager Pep Guardiola has regularly left Sane out of his starting XI this season and has explained why he can be hard on the youngster:

James Ducker at The Telegraph highlighted Guardiola's reaction to a Sane mistake:

Manchester City's strength in depth also means there is fierce competition for places in the team's attack alongside Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

Bernardo Silva has shone this season, while 18-year-old Phil Foden has broken into the first team and Guardiola can also look to David Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan.

It is a different story at Bayern where forwards Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are both set to leave the Allianz Arena this summer:

Manager Niko Kovac will need to bring in reinforcements this summer and Sane looks a perfect fit for the Bundesliga champions. The club can offer UEFA Champions League football as well as regular playing time which may be enough to tempt Sane to return to Germany.
