Yankees Add Zimmer to Staff
The New York Yankees have announced that Don Zimmer will be Joe Girardiโs bench coach tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies. This is obviously another attempt to get inside the head of Game 2 starter Pedro Martinez. The Yankees already seem to be in the head of the guy after his emotional, why pick on me, interview with the media yesterday. So it looks like the Yankees are hoping that Zimmer on the bench should push Pedro over the edge. Could this be an attempt at another brawl and maybe a few suspensions?
As you know this is a joke but wouldnโt it have made for some good TV having Don in the Yankees dugout? The pitcher and former coach are still going back and forth in the media, six years after the fact.
"โIt was an ugly scene,โ Martinez said during Wednesdayโs pregame news conference. โZim charged me and I think heโs going to say something, but his reaction was totally the opposite, [he] was trying to punch my mouth and told me a couple of bad words about my mom. I just had to react and defend myself. It was something that we have to let go, kind of, and forget about it, because it was a disgrace for baseball. Even though it wasnโt my fault, I was involved in it, and itโs one of the moments that I donโt like to see. I donโt like to see it because Iโm not a violent man.โ
"
While the words werenโt that severe the elder Zimmer took it that way.
"โPedro is full of crap,โ Zimmer told the St. Petersburg Times. โItโs what, six years later? If Pedro wants to be a big man, I donโt care what he says.โ
"
There is no doubt in my mind that if Zimmer was in the dugout tonight someone in the middle of the Yankee order would get some high Pedro heat, oops actually at this point in the game it would be a change up.
Regardless at least weโll still get some great TV out of this game tonight. Will Pedro feed off the โWhoโs Your Daddyโ chants or do the Yankees embarrass their son and even the series at one.
Hereโs the video you will probably see played more then any today.
