If The Yankees Are Varsity....then The Phils Are???

Yesterday Reggie Jackson stated that the Phillies will be playing the "varsity." Well, Reggie...you were completely right. The Phillies, behind ace Cliff Lee, looked like the MLB defending Champions and the Yankees looked like a high school varsity team.

Cliff Lee pitched masterfu"Lee," striking out 10 Yanks and going the distance once again. If you were going to show your son how to pitch you would put a tape of last nights game in the VCR. Not only was he great throwing the ball, Lee also made an amazing behind the back catch robbing Robinson Cano of a hit. At times this year Lee has been so good its almost not fair. Last night was one of those nights.

Not to be out done by their pitcher, the Fightin's offense got started early. They were patient in the first inning against Yankees' starter CC Sabathia to no avail leaving the bases loaded. That patience paid off for Chase Utley in the third inning as he worked a great at bat, then with two strikes, the next pitch ended up in the short porch in right field. Sabathia got locked in after that sitting down the next 8...until he got back to Utley. Chase's next at bat looked like a replay. Utley deposited Sabathia's 0-2 fastball into the right center bleachers giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

"General Lee" shut the down Bronx Bombers and the national media underdog Phillies added 2 runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to take World Series game one convincingly infront of what seemed like 200 Yankees "fans." Its hard to imagine Phillies fans leaving a World Series game early no matter the score.

Final verdict: $161 Million cant buy you game one of the Fall Classic Mr. Steinbrenner. Sorry.

The Series is long from over, but hopefully the Phillies can continue playing solid team baseball and we can prove once again that we are the team to beat.
