Week Seven Start/Sit Review: Don't Kill the Messenger

Kevin RobertsOct 27, 2009

Week Six brought anyone who took my advice some nice rewards . But before we can dive into preparing for week eight, we need to look back on week seven's picks to see if we saw success for a second consecutive week.

Starts: 2-3

Sits: 3-2 (check Chris Cooley)

Sleepers: 3-2 (Check Jason Campbell)

Overall Week Seven Record: 8-7

Winners

Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers (Start)

Rodgers was a gimme pick, but in case you weren't sold on him tearing it up for the third straight game, we gave you the confidence you needed.

Over 240 passing yards and three touchdowns made him an excellent start in Week Seven.

Cedric Benson, RB, Cincinnati Bengals (Start)

Benson got the ball plenty against his former team, and revenge was clearly in his mind on Sunday, as the former Bear ran for 180+ yards and a score on a meaty 37 carries.

He made for a fantastic play in Week Seven, and should continue to wow you the rest of the way.

Kurt Warner, QB, Arizona Cardinals (Sit)

If Big Ben gets two thumbs down, then so does Warner.

Warner was supposed to carve the Giants' mediocre secondary to the liking of Drew Brees, but instead threw only one touchdown, had a pick, and didn't come close to 300 yards passing.

Not a bad play, but not a bad sit candidate, either.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers (Sit)

Mendenhall found a little more success (60+ yards) than we thought he would against a tough Minnesota run defense, but no scores and a fourth quarter benching made him a good sit candidate.

Austin Collie, WR, Indianapolis Colts (Sleeper)

Collie caught his fourth touchdown in three games, and his 36 receiving yards to go with it were enough to make him a quality WR3 for the fourth straight game.

If Anthony Gonzalez is still out in Week Eight (and possibly even if he plays), expect the success for the former BYU product to continue.

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers (Sleeper)

If you started Crabtree as your WR3 or Flex play, you were pleasantly surprised with a solid effort of five catches for 56 yards.

You also had to watch in dismay as Vernon Davis caught all three of Alex Smith's second half touchdowns. The future looks bright for Crabtree after a solid debut, however.

And wth a livelier arm in Alex Smith leading the 49ers' offense, Crabtree's value is only rising.

Chris Cooley, TE, Washington Redskins (Sit)

If you were waiting for Cooley's Monday night results to rescue your fantasy team, you were greatly disappointed. Instead, you saw the Redskins lose their tight end to a broken ankle, and then watched as formerly disappointing tight end Fred Davis post career numbers.

Cooley's status hasn't been updated, but it doesn't look good. Dropping him is probably your only option.

Jason Campbell, QB, Washington Redskins (Sleeper)

We weren't predicting a Redskins upset win over the Eagles. We merely felt that the switch from Jim Zorn calling the plays to Sherman Lewis taking control would help Campbell a bit.

And if you needed him in a bind to save your bye week-defiled quarterback slot, he helped you out, just fine. Just under 300 yards and two touchdowns once again made Campbell an unlikely success story.

Duds

Ben Roethisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers (Start)

The Minnesota Vikings actually played the pass pretty well, much to the dismay of many fantasy experts. Roethlisbeger didn't sink your team, as he passed for 170+ yards and a touchdown, but he didn't blow you away, either.

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, San Diego Chargers (Start)

You expect more out of LT than a measly 70 yards against a team like the Chiefs. Hey, we knew the Chargers would score the ball. We just had no idea LT wouldn't sniff the end zone.

Take the sign of life in San Diego's offense as a plus, and bank on LT breaking out very soon.

Santonio Holmes, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers (Start)

The Steelers didn't throw a ton, but Holmes still served as a decent WR3, netting 59 receiving yards on just two receptions.

He also had a third reception for a touchdown called back due to a penalty, which would have made him a very solid play.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets (Sit)

Sanchez bounced back just fine after a horrible Week Six, throwing for 143 yards and a touchdown, while running for another.

He would have been a perfect sit candidate if it weren't for his rushing touchdown to push him over the top.

Brandon Jacobs, RB, New York Giants (Sit)

Jacobs had been in a rut for most of the season, but put up solid numbers against a previously stout Arizona run defense.

A touchdown and 80+ total yards made him a quality RB2 in Week Seven.

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina Panthers (Sleeper)

Stewart didn't have a ton of success (40+ yards) against a Bills defense that he was supposed to help dominate.

Jake Delhomme throwing three interceptions assured that.

Lance Moore, WR, New Orleans Saints (Sleeper)

It looks like Moore will have to continue walking the line between sleeper and bust this year, and he registered just two grabs for 18 yards against the Dolphins.
